Health Secretary Tells Employers They Need To Care More For Sick Workers

Britain's Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock arrives to attend the weekly meeting of the cabinet in Downing Street in London

"But focusing on the responsibilities of patients isn't about penalising people".

Mr English added: "Prevention is a win-win both in the obvious impact it has on the health of the population and its cost effectiveness in reducing future demand on NHS services".

Duncan Selbie, chief executive Public Health England, said: "We need to move from a system that detects and treats illnesses to one that also predicts and prevents poor health through promoting health in all policies and puts people back in charge of their own health".

"Community pharmacies are ideally placed to help people to stay healthy and avoid visits to hospital - and look forward to working with the government to make this shared vision a reality".

"It's about helping them make better choices, giving them all the support we can, because we know taking the tough decisions is never easy", he will tell the annual meeting of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes.

While he did not reveal how the extra funds will be allocated, Mr Hancock said "in practice" the DH's new prevention vision will require "greater funding for pre-primary, primary and community care - and support for the staff who work in these services".

"In the United Kingdom, we are spending £97bn of public money on treating disease and only £8bn preventing it across the United Kingdom", he said.

Sarnia postal workers join rotating walkouts
The union is calling for a national overtime ban for both of its major bargaining units at Canada Post. This means more work for postal employees, he said.

"You don't have to be an economist to see those numbers don't stack up".

He also defended government plans to stockpile medicines, appearing to blame Brussels for the contingency.

Turning Point's Victor Adebowale said "the idea that people should take responsibility for their own health' is part of what preventative services are about".

Speaking on 5 Live Breakfast earlier today, he said that new technology and new data techniques allow people to be more targeted about health than previously.

"Over the course of our lives, our first and most frequent interactions with health and social care services are likely to be with our GP, school nurse, dentist, local pharmacist, social worker, health visitor or midwife", the DH said. While it's clear he sees that prevention isn't an optional extra, we need to see properly funded, accountable services delivered by a fully staffed nursing workforce backed by adequate resources.

"There is a need to reverse the cuts to public health budgets, as in many areas, public health services do not adequately meet the health needs of the local population".

Jonathan Ashworth MP, Labour's Shadow Health and Social Care Secretary, said: "The Tories have imposed swingeing cuts to public health services, slashing vital prevention support such as smoking cessation services, sexual health services, substance misuse services and obesity help".
