Hold tight for a Brexit breakthrough, May tells Cabinet

Norwegian soldiers run for cover during an attempt to storm an opposing British Army position

A senior member of the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party earlier said it looked like Britain would exit the European Union without a deal, indicating domestic political headwinds togetting a deal through a split parliament with less than five months to go to Brexit day.

May spokesperson said it was likely that a further cabinet meeting would be held before a deal was agreed, hinting that this could happen later in the week.

The backstop arrangement would come into force should a future EU-UK trade relationship fail to avert a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

In one sign of the fevered atmosphere, the value of the pound soared on the money markets after the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg tweeted that Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab had left the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday with a "thumbs up" gesture. But May faces pressure from some Cabinet members not to agree to a solution that binds Britain to European Union trade rules indefinitely after it leaves the bloc in March.

May spokesman James Slack said she told the ministers she was confident of reaching a deal, but "while the United Kingdom should aim to secure a withdrawal agreement as soon as possible, this should not be done at any cost".

ITV's political editor Robert Peston reports that a government official predicted the Prime Minister would be able to win over her cabinet this week, "but not without saying goodbye to some colleagues".

A spokesman for Mr Varadkar said: "The Taoiseach indicated an openness to consider proposals for a review, provided that it was clear that the outcome of any such review could not involve a unilateral decision to end the backstop".

Mr Baker said: "If we are going to regulate our own economy, if we are going to have our own independent trade policy, if we are going to be a normal independent country - which is what I understood the referendum result to have decided - then we need to be out of the customs union and we need to get out of the customs union in a timely way".

Mr Gauke told a Channel 4 Brexit debate show: 'If we leave on no-deal terms there's no good shying away, it will be very bad for us economically.

"We will need to be satisfied in the negotiations that we have achieved the best deal that we possibly can for the United Kingdom", he added.

The whole process could cost up to £200, says the British Veterinary Association, who warned that vets could struggle with the massive flood of demand if Britain fails to get a deal.

Looks like we're heading for no deal.

Earlier today in the House of Commons, MPs were told they will be presented with a "comprehensive analysis" of the economic impact of the Government's final Brexit deal prior to a vote on it.

Ireland's Europe minister Helen McEntee told RTE on Tuesday that the proposal could pave the way to a deal.
