Lawsuit: Illinois guard shot by police had on security hat

Jemel Roberson 26 of Chicago wanted to become a police officer and was a church organist

The Mayor of south suburban Robbins has ordered a nightclub temporarily closed pending the outcome of a full investigation into the fatal shooting of security guard Jemel Roberson over the weekend.

Around 4am on Sunday, a group of drunk men was reportedly told by security to leave Manny's Blue Room Bar in Robbins, Illinois.

Witnesses said Roberson, who was black, apprehended a man involved in the bar shooting after he opened fire.

Calls to the Illinois State Police and Midlothian Police Department weren't immediately returned.

As police were responding to the bar, Roberson was able to catch "one of the perpetrators", the lawsuit states. "I guess when the police got there, they probably thought he was one of the bad guys, cause he had his gun on the guy and they shot him".

The incident began with a confrontation involving several men, and a man left to retrieve a gun.

Midlothian Police Chief Daniel Delaney said officers from his department responded to the initial shooting and found multiple gunshot victims inside the bar, according to a statement from the Midlothian Police Department.

It is unclear if police knew he was a security guard or if they accidentally shot him, thinking he was one of those who had been thrown out of the bar.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office has opened a criminal investigation into the bar shooting.

Macron Prefers Diplomacy Through ‘Direct Discussion,’ Not Tweets
Macron told him that he agrees. " Just returned from France where much was accomplished in my meetings with World Leaders ". I told them that this situation can not continue - It is, and always has been, ridiculously unfair to the United States.

He played the organ at local churches and was about to start training to become a cop himself, they said.

"Everybody is screaming out, 'He's a security guard,"' Harris said.

The court documents allege that Roberson apprehended a shooting suspect outside the bar early Sunday morning, and that the unknown police officer used excessive force, shooting and killing him, while Roberson was trying to protect the patrons. "And they basically saw a Black man with a gun and killed him".

Early Sunday morning at an IL bar, shots rang out and a Black security guard sprang into action to detain the suspect.

Roberson was described as an "upstanding young man" and a promising musician.

Roberson also had hopes of someday becoming a police officer, according to his son's mother.

"Once again, it's the continued narrative that we see of shoot first, ask questions later", the Rev. LeAundre Hill of Purposed Church told WGN.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family here. "So, he was doing his job and holding on to somebody until ... police arrived". Jemel was a gifted basketball player and musician, and his love for God and his family were at the forefront of his life.
