Macron stokes anger by calling Petain 'great' WWI soldier

"I pardon nothing, but I erase nothing of our history", Macron added.

Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron climbed the hill that had been at the centre of the fighting to look out on a scene of rural French tranquillity.

Macron's comments were made during a visit to the northern town of Charleville-Mzires, part of a tour of former battlefields marking the centenary of the 1918 armistice that ended World War I.

"The only thing we will remember about Petain is that he was convicted, in the name of the French people, of national indignity during his trial in 1945", he said in a statement.

Macron will be represented by a general who is his top military advisor. A 58-year old colonel at the start of battle in 1914, Pétain earned acclaim for stopping the Germans at the Battle of Verdun and assumed command of the French forces in 1917, rebuilding troop morale after a series of mutinies and other setbacks. In September, he told a young out-of-work gardener that he need only "cross the street" to find a job.

France's leading Jewish organization, known by the initials CRIF, issued a searing criticism of Macron's stance.

Petain led France's Vichy regime during the Second World War and was sentenced to death for collaboration before then-president Charles de Gaulle, a longtime admirer, reduced the punishment to life in prison. "Petain was the person who allowed the deportation of 76,000 French Jews to death camps".

"I am shocked by this statement by Macron", CRIF president Francis Kalifat said. "Petain signed the [law on] the status of Jews that meant Jews were excluded from public functions, education and forced to wear the Jewish star".

Leicester return to King Power Stadium for farewell to Vichai
Players and staff flew to Bangkok after Saturday's 1-0 win at Cardiff to attend Mr Srivaddhanaprabha's funeral and returned on Tuesday.

"Every aggression perpetrated against one of our citizens because they are Jewish echoes like the breaking of new crystal", the French prime minister wrote on Facebook, referring to the start of the Nazi drive to wipe out Jews on November 9, 1938, also known as the Night of Broken Glass.

"Petain is a traitor and an anti-Semite", tweeted Jean-Luc Melenchon of the far-left France Unbowed party, echoing a flurry of angry postings. "When one presides over France, one must measure up to its history".

"Macron, this time you've gone too far!" "This anti-Semitic traitor can not be amnestied by the caprice of Macron".

Yet the marshal has always been considered an excellent tactician during the Great War, not least for halting the German advance at Verdun in 1916.

Hours later, French government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux said in a Facebook post that no tribute would be paid to Ptain in Saturday's ceremony.

On Saturday, Petain will be honored alongside seven other French generals at a ceremony to be held at Les Invalides in Paris.

Historians generally consider the marshal a brilliant tactician during World War I, not least for halting the German advance at Verdun in 1916.
