Marseille building collapse: Fourth body found in ruins

French rescuers find body in ruins of collapsed buildings

The bodies of two men and one woman have been found in the rubble of two buildings that collapsed in the city of Marseille on Monday, the local fire brigade said, while searches continued for other people who might be buried.

Google Maps images taken in recent months showed the two collapsed buildings had large visible cracks in their facades.

The news service reports that nine of that building's 10 units were occupied, with a shop filling the lower level.

Due to the collapse of buildings formed the cloud of dust and a big hole on the spot where formerly stood the house. An adjoining third building, number 67, sustained damage and was torn down for fear it would collapse, as well. One of them had been condemned and, with its windows boarded up, was well-secured and in theory unoccupied, officials said.

A fifth body was recovered on Wednesday morning under rubble of the dilapidated buildings, which crumbled suddenly on Monday morning in Noailles, a working-class district in the heart of the port city.

"We still have hope, even if that hope is fading".

A local resident, Toufik Ben Rhouma, blamed Marseille city hall for the disaster. He added that the figures had changed little since making Marseille the European city with "the most decaying housing".

"She was a great girl, she used to come and study at the bar", he said, without giving his name.

People were living in the other building that collapsed, 65 rue d'Aubagne. "It could have been me", she said.

"The walls had been moving for several weeks and cracks had appeared", the 25-year-old philosophy student said.

The buildings were in a small shopping street in the centre of the city.

According 2015, about 100 thousand inhabitants of Marseille, live in housing that threatens their health or safety.
