Midterms fallout: Attorney General Jeff Sessions quits

Attorney General Jeff Sessions

US Attorney-General Jeff Sessions has resigned as the country's chief law enforcement officer at President Donald Trump's request.

Sessions announced his resignation in an undated letter to President Donald Trump. He took credit for reversing a recent rise in violent crime and for taking a hardline stance on illegal immigration and gangs.

Mr. Sessions had recused himself from that matter, causing much of the break with Mr. Trump.

Sessions's recusal stems from the fact he was an active supporter of Trump's 2016 campaign.

Department veterans have expressed concerns that Trump's repeated public attacks on Sessions, the Justice Department and the FBI could cause lasting damage to federal law enforcement.

Despite initially defending Sessions, as the Justice Department's Russian Federation probe appeared to move deeper inside Trump's inner circle to his eldest son and son-in-law, the president began to grow disenchanted with his attorney general.

PUBG PS4 Release Could Happen as Early as December, Reports Suggest
The developer plans for nine regions to compete through three phases during 2019, with two third-party run global competitions. Featuring universal rules and point scoring, teams of four will battle it out across Miramar and Erangel in first-person mode.

But it became clear Democrats meant to use their newfound majority to investigate what had transpired.

"Throughout his career, as a prosecutor, a Senator and as Attorney General, he remained steadfast in his commitment to the rule of law and his love of our great nation", McConnell's statement said.

Sessions announced his plan to resign in a letter to the White House on Wednesday. "Why is the President making this change and who has authority over Special Counsel Mueller's investigation?"

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer commented on Sessions while holding a news conference about the midterm elections, saying he felt the announcement was suspicious.

Whitaker added in the piece that "it is time for [Rod] Rosenstein...to order Mueller to limit the scope of his investigation".

Despite it all, Sessions never found himself back in favor with the president.

Whitaker wrote, "Mueller has come up to a red line in the Russian Federation 2016 election-meddling investigation that he is dangerously close to crossing..."
