'Miracle' Kept 50 IDF Soldiers From Being Killed by Hamas Missile

Israel and Hamas have gone to war three times, and rocket-fire from Gaza and Israeli air strikes against militant targets are a regular occurrence.

The Israeli military says 200 launches were sent toward Israel, and the Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted at least 60.

Of the three cities, Ashkelon is closest to Gaza.

Hamas issued a warning to Israel on Monday that if the IDF responded with what Hamas called "excessive aggression" after Monday's rocket attacks from Gaza, the response from Hamas would be to "increase the depth and intensity" of its shelling of Israel. The military said more than 70 militant targets in the Gaza Strip were hit, Naomi Zeveloff reports for NPR from Tel Aviv.

Six Palestinians reportedly have been killed in Israeli airstrikes, the Maan Palestinian news agency reported.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, and Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, together with senior members of the security echelon met last night and announced that they reached "operational decisions".

Netanyahu was in Paris, where he had joined dozens of world leaders in commemorating the end of World War I.

According to Palestinians, an Israeli special forces operative was rescued from the Hamas-ruled territory.

Among the sites targeted by the IDF was a building, which housed the Hamas-run Al-Aqsa television station.

A map shows the locations of an Israel raid late on Sunday and a bus hit by a mortar fired from Gaza on Monday. Up to 220 Palestinians, including children and media workers, have been killed by Israeli troops during violent clashes between protesters and the IDF.

A gun battle erupted and Israeli tanks and aircraft opened fire in the area, witnesses said.

The Palestinian funerals were held Monday afternoon.

The warning was issued on Tuesday, hours after a rocket fired from Gaza killed an Israeli man in a direct hit on a residential building in the coastal town of Ashkelon.

A 19-year-old man was critically wounded in one explosion in southern Israel, Israeli medics said.

Egypt has for months tried to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Seven Hamas terrorists were killed in the operation.

It did not provide other details about the operation.

According toAl Jazeera,an Israeli special forces team entered Gaza late Sunday in a civilian vehicle and proceeded to shoot and kill one Hamas commander in what Gaza officials denounced as an assassination and a "cowardly" escalation of tensions.

Israel's military said more than 80 rockets were launched from Gaza and it was conducting retaliatory air strikes for the fire it blamed on Hamas.

Sirens were heard in southern Israel overnight, and school is closed Monday in the communities surrounding Gaza.

Hamas won Palestinian elections in 2006 and reinforced its power in the Gaza Strip after ousting West Bank-based Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' rival Fatah faction in clashes the following year. Both had agreed to indirect cash and fuel deals with Qatar and Egypt last week and it was not clear if they would continue.

In aerial attacks on Tuesday, Israel's military said it took out a rocket-launching squad and fired at several Palestinians infiltrating through the border fence around Gaza, which Israel keeps under blockade.

Netanyahu described the move as "the right step".
