New Treatment Could Let Those with Celiac Disease Eat Gluten

Celiac Disease Vaccine In Clinical Trials Would Let People Eat Gluten Again

But a new treatment now in phase II clinical trials may change all that, allowing people with the disorder to include gluten in their diets. It has proven itself to be both safe and tolerable in adults with Celiac Disease.

Those that suffer from Celiac disease may be able to start eating gluten again thanks to an experimental vaccine. It can damage the ability of the intestine to absorb nutrients and can lead to major health problems, including the development of other diseases like cancer or diabetes, according to the foundation.

People who have celiac disease can not eat wheat, barley, and rye products. Finally, if the treatment passes this phase, it may apply for FDA approval so it can be made available to patients in the United States.

Nexvax2 hopes to help people with specific immune recognition genes that make up around 90 percent of the celiac patient population, according to ImmusanT, Inc., the MA company behind the vaccine. About 80 to 90 percent of those who have celiac disease also carry the immune recognition gene.

ImmusanT is ultimately looking to develop a vaccine that would eliminate the need for a gluten-free diet.

Midterm lessons: five key takeaways from the election results
The 78-year-old Pelosi was the first woman to be House speaker, from 2007 to 2011, when Democrats last held a House majority. As the returns came in, voters were on track to send at least 99 women to the House, shattering the record of 84 now.

"Further research and results are awaited, but if the therapy does work, it has the potential to enable patients to return to a normal diet and improved health", said Dr. Dean Railey, a gastroenterologist in Sunrise, Florida, who is not affiliated with Nexvax2.

Clinical trials usually take around two years, so it would be a while before the vaccine becomes widely available.

"This trial is important in establishing clinical proof-of-concept for a treatment that would provide benefit beyond that of the gluten-free diet", said Jason Tye-Din of the Royal Melbourne Hospital and principal investigator.

People who suffer from celiac disease must eat a strict, gluten-free diet but a new treatment now being tested could, if clinical trials work and it's approved, change that. "Even the most diligent patients can suffer the adverse effects of accidental exposure", study researcher Jason Tye-Din, head of celiac research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, Australia, said in an October 30 statement.

The price of the vaccine has not yet been disclosed to the public as of this writing.
