NJ tops in U.S. in fall Leapfrog hospital safety grades

Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi is located at 1100 Belk Blvd

It's one of 28 measures Leapfrog Group assesses to assign hospitals grades.

"An "A" grade from The Leapfrog Group is the gold standard for patient safety and a huge achievement", said Lori J. Morgan, MD, MBA, president and CEO, Huntington Hospital.

Of more than 2,600 hospitals graded nationwide, 32 percent earned an "A", 24 percent earned a "B", 37 percent a "C", 6 percent a "D" and just under 1 percent an "F". Three hospitals earned a D and two earned an F. IL sits at No. 12, up from No. 15 in the spring, on Leapfrog's state rankings list, which compares the number of "A" hospitals in a state with its total number of graded hospitals. We addressed gaps in service; were transparent in providing hospital data; appointed patients to governing committees; improved our ICU coverage, and administered hospital-wide patient safety surveys, among other things.

Earlier this year, FWMC received the 2018 Patient Safety Excellence Award, as well as Five-Star commendations for cardiac and orthopedic treatment, and gallbladder and appendix surgeries. Overall, the 5 states with the highest percentage of "A" hospitals this fall are New Jersey, Oregon, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Texas. It has one of the busiest emergency rooms in the metropolitan area, seeing over 40,000 patients each year, and employs more than 400 staff. Nexus Health, a private health care organization, owns and manages the hospital.

Maryland scoring, however, is intricate in that Leapfrog began publically reporting grades for general acute care hospitals in the state for the first time in 2017. "I'm very proud of our team and I'm honored to work alongside them".

Accused mail bomber hit with 30-count indictment
Prior to the arrest, the registered Republican was living in a van plastered with pro-Trump and anti-Democrat stickers. The document said he mailed 16 improvised explosive devices though the US mail to victims across the country.

Hospitals are expected to report the measure in Leapfrog's Hospital Survey and they can get up to 100 points depending on their performance. Ratings are based on how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries, infections, and accidents.

Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 USA hospitals twice per year. This information is also used within Catholic Health to continuously monitor and improve quality outcomes throughout its hospitals. New Jersey now holds the top spot, but ranked 17th in the spring. Leapfrog said medication errors are the most common errors made in hospitals, but no Triangle hospital submitted this data this time around and it's not included in their letter grades. The state-funded hospital is now operating under a monitor and the state identified a number of serious infection control deficiencies during a recent inspection, following a bacterial outbreak that infected four medically fragile infants, one of whom may have died as a result.

"It also confirms our continued need for safer, more effective, and more consistent processes for creating the best patient experience possible", Ramunno said.

It is important that patients and their families understand their choices for health care and know which providers are equipped to safely treat them.
"From the moment Prime Healthcare took ownership of the hospital, patient safety and continuous quality improvement were the top priority". "The employees and physicians of Saint Michael's truly deserve this award because it is their dedication and commitment to a culture of safety that allowed the hospital to receive this national designation", she said. And Leapfrog also assesses training, staffing and hospital protocols.
