Republicans Hold on to Senate, Blocking Democrats' Chances to Take Control

When do the midterm elections 2018 results expected to come out?

Democrats now need to win only nine more Republican House seats to reach the net gain of 23 seats they need to secure a majority.

Trump had fought hard before polling day, crisscrossing the country to claim that Democrats would introduce socialism and making incendiary attacks on illegal immigration that opponents denounced as racist.

In Virginia, political newcomer Jennifer Wexton defeated two-term GOP Rep. Barbara Comstock.

Women voted considerably more in favor of their congressional Democratic candidate - with fewer than 4 in 10 voting for the Republican, according to VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 113,000 voters and about 20,000 nonvoters - conducted for The Associated Press by NORC at the University of Chicago.

The opposite trends in the House and the Senate speak to the quirks of the political system but also the growing divide between urban, diverse, more affluent Democratic areas and largely white, rural conservative regions.

One by one, those districts were carried by the Democrats.

Increased representation of Democrats at the polls also contributed to Democratic victories in the House.

Trump had noted the energy as he wrapped up a punishing schedule of rallies around the country that were meant to boost Republican candidates - and his own brand heading towards reelection in 2020. At least three other red districts flipped to blue.

But Democrats are on course to win the House of Representatives, which would deal a blow to the president's agenda. More women than ever were running, along with veterans and minorities, many of them motivated by alarm over Trump's rise. Fueling their intensity has been Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric and policies, his efforts to dismantle health care protections enacted under President Barack Obama and the #MeToo movement's fury over sexual harassment.

Worldwide web inventor wants new ‘contract’ to make web safe
We have fake news , we have problems with privacy, we have people being profiled and manipulated", he said in an opening address. Accountability, he said, might involve an annual report that tests how different companies and governments are holding up.

Top Democratic leaders left little room for doubt that they would inherit the gavel on Tuesday night.

The debate was dominated not by the GOP's $1.5 trillion tax cuts but by Trump's dire prediction of "invasion" from the migrant caravan and what he called the "radical" agenda of speaker-in-waiting Pelosi.

Democrats seized control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday in a midterm setback for Donald Trump, but the U.S. president managed to avoid a feared "blue wave" as his Republican Party expanded its Senate majority after a polarizing, racially charged campaign.

In contrast, Democrats have largely maintained a almost unwavering focus on health care in their closing message to voters. Women and independent voters were expected to play a major role in the outcome. State law also allows voters to mail in their ballots on Election Day.

Outside Richmond, Virginia, one-time tea party favorite Rep. Dave Brat lost to Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative motivated to run for office after the GOP vote to gut the Affordable Care Act. By a margin of 58 to 34, voters said that the Democratic Party would be better able to protect people with pre-existing conditions.

In a suburban battleground in Atlanta, Republican Rep. Karen Handel won a costly special election earlier this cycle but faced an upstart challenge from Lucy McBath, whose 17-year-old son was shot and killed at a gas station.

And in North Dakota, Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp was ousted by her Republican challenger. "The choice is clear: it's a choice between prosperity and higher taxes". Also victorious was Virginia Democrat Tim Kaine, his party's vanquished 2016 vice presidential candidate, along with the party's incumbents in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Rhode Island.

Carol Harvey, a McLean resident who says she always votes for Democrats, stressed the importance of this year's election, saying that "it's critical, Republicans aren't normal".

"We had a great night particularly when it comes to the Senate, and still some solid wins in the House". The forecast indicated the GOP would pick up two seats and end up with a 53-47 advantage. Money from both sides has poured into the race, which broke the record for the most expensive race for a House seat in history. "I feel confident we will win, it's just a question of the size of victory".
