Smoking, diabetes and high blood pressure increase women's risk of heart attack

Нездоровый образ жизни для женщин опаснее чем для мужчин

Men in Britain now face a roughly three-times greater risk of suffering a heart attack, known as myocardial infarction, compared to women because, in general, they live unhealthier lives.

Researchers from The George Institute for Global Health in Australia and Britain found both men and women had increased risks of heart attack if they smoked, had diabetes or high blood pressure and were overweight.

"In our study we show that if you eat most of your calories before 6 p.m., you may have better cardiovascular health".

Every one per cent increase in the number of calories eaten after 6 p.m. - about 20 calories in a 2,000-calorie daily diet - was associated with higher fasting glucose, insulin and insulin resistance, all of which are associated with an increased risk of diabetes. For women with hypertension of the second degree the risk of heart attacks increased by 152% compared to 71% of the stronger sex.

According to a large population study from the United Kingdom, women who smoke or those who have high blood pressure or diabetes are at a greater risk of heart attacks than men with same risks.

While the overall impact of smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes on heart attack risk decreased in both sexes with age, the greater risk these factors had on the risk of heart attack in women relative to their impact in men persisted.

"What we want is for women to be more aware that heart attacks happen to women as well as men", said Millett. The population was tracked for an average of seven years during which 5,081 individuals had their first heart attack.

But they emphasised that due to its design the could draw no firm conclusions between cause and effect.

"It is also true that women are less likely to get similar screen and prevention interventions than men", he said.

Eating a meal rich in calories for dinner can increase the risk of diabetes as well as lead to poorer cardiovascular health, researchers have warned.

The Oxford University team said that unless British women begin to improve their lifestyles, their rate of heart attacks would begin to move towards that of men. "However, several major risk factors increase the risk in women more than they increase the risk in men, so women with these factors experience a relative disadvantage", said Dr. Elizabeth Millett, Epidemiologist at The George Institute UK, who led the research using data from the UK Biobank.

However, they suggested that the sex difference might be partly explained by differences in body shape.

"Women should, at least, receive the same access to guideline-based treatments for diabetes and hypertension, and to resources to help lose weight and stop smoking as do men", the authors say. Studies have shown that women are 15 percent less likely to be treated same as men for diabetes in UK.

"They're focused mainly on breast cancer". Additional symptoms, more common in women, are unusual tiredness, dizziness, cold sweats, and nausea or vomiting. Professor Metin Avkiran, of the British Heart Foundation in a statement said, "This is an important reminder that heart disease does not discriminate, so we must shift perceptions that it only affects men".
