Sub found after disappearing a year ago with 44 aboard

Argentina submarine: ARA San Juan found

The Argentine navy called off its rescue operation about two weeks after the sub's disappearance, saying there was "no chance of survival" for its crew, but search efforts continued.

The US company Ocean Infinity, contracted by the Argentinian authorities to search for the missing ARA San Juan submarine, has located the vessel that had been missing since November 2017, the Argentinian Navy said on Saturday.

Speaking Thursday, on the anniversary of the disappearance, Argentine President Mauricio Macri told the families of the submariners they should not feel alone, and offered his "absolute and non-negotiable commitment" to find "the truth". "From the analysis of the state in which the submarine has been found, we will see how to proceed", he said. The navy said the blast could have been caused by a "concentration of hydrogen" triggered by the battery problem reported by the captain.

The Argentine navy said it could have been the sound of the submarine imploding.

Several senior officers were dismissed, including Navy chief Marcelo Srur, and numerous families have expressed anger and disappointment at the government's efforts to find their missing relatives.

The military craft still had a seven-day supply of air left when it released coordinates of its last position 430 km off Argentina's Patagonian coast on November 15, 2017.

Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013, the same year as Wolff, and since 2014 has won 50 of the 99 races, an average of 10 per season. It's been such an incredible journey and by no means has it been easy for anybody.

A sound consistent with an explosion was detected in the ocean near the sub's last known location.

The navy has a poor reputation in Argentina. However, the firm would only receive the money if the ARA San Juan was found. The judge heading the case has so far heard testimony from 70 people but says she is no closer to knowing what happened.

Argentina's government bowed to pressure from the families of the missing crew in January by offering $US4.8 million ($A6.5 million) for information leading to the submarine's recovery.

The submarine disappeared on the edge of the Argentine shelf where depths plummet from 200 meters (650 feet) to more than 3,000 meters.

The loss of the San Juan is the first major tragedy to hit the navy since the Falklands War in 1982.
