Tanzanian authorities have released CPJ sub-Saharan Africa Representative Muthoki Mumo and Africa Program Coordinator Angela Quintal in Dar es Salaam.

Former Mail & Guardian editor Angela Quintal is safe and is back at her hotel after being detained by Tanzanian authorities on Wednesday night, the Department of International Relations has confirmed.

The two, a former Nation journalist Muthoki Mumo and South Africa's Angela Quintal, were arrested while in their Dar es Salaam hotel room and detained at an unknown location.

Quintal tweeted before 1am on Tuesday morning that she and her colleague had been released.

The officials - reportedly from Tanzania Immigration authority are said to have searched the pair's belongings and would not return their passports when asked.

Quintal worked for the Guardian as an editor while Ms Mumo worked for the Nation group before shifting to CPJ. "They were in the country on a reporting mission for CPJ".

"We continue to engage with our Government of Tanzania counterparts on a wide range of issues, including those related to human rights", the State Department said in a statement Wednesday.

Recently, Nanjala Nyabola, a political scientist, also raised alarm over the passage of an amendment to Tanzania's national statistics law, imposing criminal penalties for anyone who publishes information that challenges the government's statistics.
