Tiger Woods Turns Down $3 Million to Play in Saudi Arabia

Golfing legend Tiger Woods has reportedly turned down a guaranteed $3.3 million offer to compete in the European Tour's inaugural event in Saudi Arabia, the Daily Mail report.

The course will be "one of the key ingredients in delivering Saudi Arabia's much-lauded "Vision 2030" - the plan to showcase the kingdom's desire to expand its business, leisure and tourism industries", the tour said at the time.

Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau, a four-time victor in 2018 who partnered Woods in Paris, will all tee it up in the no-cut event, where former winners Hideki Matsuyama and Bubba Watson are also involved.

Turkish officials concluded that Saudi agents awaited Khashoggi and killed him inside the consulate, removing his head and fingers in the process.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, was a frequent critic of Saudi leader Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

While it is not clear why Woods has pulled out from the tournament, Telegraph sources speculate it could be over the bad press such an appearance would have attracted given the backlash over Khashoggi's killing.

Tennis superstar Roger Federer, a friend of Woods, recently revealed that he turned down a $1 million offer to play in an exhibition in Saudi Arabia in December.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) made a decision to go ahead with a Riyadh event last week, prompting some fans to accuse it of accepting "Saudi blood money".

"I prefer not to play", Federer told reporters.

Both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were to play each other at the event, but Djokovic announced Friday that he would be dropping out because of an injury to Nadal.

For the first time in its history, the 2019 European Tour has scheduled events in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia in what some have called the "desert swing".

"Like many global companies we monitor situations like this", Pelley said, per Golf Digest. "So we have looked at the viability of this golf tournament. The Middle East is very important to the European Tour".
