Trump to visit California as number of missing reaches 1000 amid wildfires

Remains of at least 71 people have been recovered so far in and around a Sierra foothills hamlet that was home to almost 27,000 residents before the town was largely incinerated by the deadly Camp Fire on November 8.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told reporters the number of people unaccounted for nearly doubled from 631 to 1,011 in 24 hours as authorities receive more reports of people missing and as emergency calls made when the fire broke out are reviewed.

Honea underlined that the list of missing was constantly fluctuating and it did not mean that all those on the list were presumed dead.

On Friday night, Butte County Sheriff Korea Honea said the remains of eight more fire victims were recovered during the day, bringing the death toll to 71.

The blaze that started 8 November all but razed the town of Paradise, population 27,000, and heavily damaged the outlying communities of Magalia and Concow.

The president was accompanied on his visit by chief of staff John Kelly and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.

California Governor Jerry Brown, who has criticised this argument as simplistic, welcomed the president to the state.

"They're out there fighting and they're fighting like hell", Trump said of the first responders.

A canyon home was left untouched amid the surrounding charred and blackened hillsides from the Woolsey Fire along Lobo Canyon Road in California.

Nick Shawkey, a state fire captain from rural Northern California, said Trump's visit was the mark of a good leader. The president has been criticized for initially responding to the fire by blaming the conflagrations on "poor" forest management and threatening to cut off federal payments.

"This is a dynamic list", Honea told reporters, saying it was compiled from "raw data" that likely included some duplication of names reported with more than one spelling.

The President focused in several times on the issue of management of the forest to prevent future fires, stressing to reporters that he and the Democrat governors are on the same page when it comes to what he calls "safe forests".

Asked if he believed climate change had played any role in the fires, Trump again pointed to the forest "management factor" and insisted that his "strong opinion" - he has been skeptical of man's role in global warming - remained unchanged.

Roslyn Roberts, 73, forced from her home in Paradise, said she voted for Trump but would disagree with him if she has the chance on Saturday. "Thousands and thousands of homes got destroyed with no trees around", Roslyn Roberts told Reuters.

"We're having to stay at a Marriott, which is like $100 a night, and we're running out of money", Wilson said as he stood outside in rubber sandals and no socks - the only footwear he had when he fled the flames that destroyed his home.

President Donald Trump is set to visit the western state on Saturday.

The Camp Fire has burned 146,000 acres (59,000 hectares) and was 50 percent contained by Friday, authorities said.

A blanket of haze enveloped the region and the Golden Gate Bridge was shrouded in thick smog.

Rescuers with sniffer dogs have been conducting a painstaking house-to-house search.

"I'm still going to keep on looking and hope for the best", Jhonathan Clark told AFP. He was hunting for his brother, sister-in-law and nephew.

The Camp Fire coincided with a series of smaller blazes in Southern California, most notably the Woolsey Fire, which is linked to three fatalities and has destroyed at least 500 structures near the Malibu coast west of Los Angeles.

That inferno, which is about two thirds the size of the Camp Fire, was 82 percent contained Saturday.
