Trump turns in written answers to Mueller questions, lawyers say

Mueller might soon bring charges that even Trump die-hards can't trivialize

Separately, a report in the New York Times says that Mr Trump earlier this year requested that prosecutions be opened against his 2016 presidential opponent Hillary Clinton and the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

His lawyer, Jay Sekulow, said the questions answered in writing were exclusively related to the issue of Russian Federation and did not take into account suggestions that the president has tried to obstruct the investigation - notably through his sacking of former FBI director James Comey. After Colbert pointed out the flaws in Trump's broader swipe against Schiff, he delighted in the fact that POTUS' insult gave him a free pass to say the word "shit" on air, and he chose to take full advantage of it.

Trump - who has repeatedly criticised Mueller's investigation, which is especially concerned with whether his campaign colluded with Russian Federation - also confirmed that the written answers had been completed. There have been reports, however, that the president's legal team has been staunchly opposed to a personal encounter between Trump and Mueller and eventually talked the president out of it.

Trump has denied knowing about the Trump Tower meeting with the Russians, who had promised damaging information about Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Mueller has already brought charges against some former Trump aides, including his former campaign chairman and his former national security adviser, as well as a number of Russian individuals and entities.

He could qualify for his eighth semi-final in the tournament if he beat Alexander Zverev and if John Isner then beat Marin Cilic . The world No 5 began to crank through the gears in the second set earning break points on four consecutive Cilic service games.

The president told reporters last week that he had prepared the responses himself.

Giuliani later told Reuters there was "very little hope" Trump would sit for an interview with the special counsel. If Trump's responses are deemed satisfactory, he moves past the threat of an in-person interview, which he and his lawyers want to avoid.

Giuliani has not ruled out that Trump might answer further questions if forwarded by Mueller, but said that it is "unlikely we will answer any more questions".

After his appointment, Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer said the president risked creating a "constitutional crisis" if he sought to impede the Mueller investigation.

The investigation is now being overseen by Matthew Whitaker, who became acting attorney general following the sacking of Mr Sessions earlier this month. "As other presidents have found out, they are not above the law".
