Turkey scores high in antibiotic resistance amid superbug concerns

Superbugs To'Kill Millions By 2050 Unless Countries Act Warn Experts

A report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development also said that over the next 30 years superbugs could kill 1.1 million people in North America and Australia and 1.3 million in Europe.

The report says while average resistance growth seems to be slowing down, there was serious causes for concern. Often called antimicrobial resistance or AMR, the problem has grown in recent years as bugs resistant to multiple drugs have developed and drugmakers have cut back investment in this field. The country was already among the top three countries in terms of weak antimicrobial resistance to some infections according to a 2014 report by the World Health Organization (WHO).Reforming its healthcare system in the past decade, Turkey eased access to health services, saving millions from the nightmare of waiting for treatment at understaffed hospitals and included more citizens within the social security system.

Tim Jinks, head of the Wellcome Trust's drug-resistant infections priority programme, said: "This new OECD report offers important insight into how simple, cost-effective surveillance, prevention and control methods could save lives globally".

"AMR costs more than the flu, more than HIV, more than tuberculosis". "The public health package could pay for itself within just 1 year and end up by saving $4.8 billion of dollars per year in OECD countries". "And it will cost even more if countries don't put into place actions to tackle this problem", he said.

Ms Hajiyeva's legal team sought to overturn the Unexplained Wealth Order so she could retain ownership of her properties. Mrs Hajiyeva is at the centre of an inquiry by the National Crime Agency into dirty overseas cash.

"Drug-resistant superbugs are on the rise worldwide and represent a fundamental threat to global health and development".

In low and middle-income countries, drug resistance is high and projected to grow rapidly.

Resistance to second and third-line antibiotics - which presents the most advanced and effective line of defence to prevent infections - is expected to be 70 percent higher in 2030, compared to AMR rates in 2005 for the same antibiotic-bacterium combinations, while resistance to third-line treatments will double in European Union countries.

"In Brazil, Indonesia and Russian Federation, between 40 and 60% of the infections are already resistant, compared with 17% on average in the OECD countries", underlines this last.
