‘Unbelievable’ Pink Legacy Diamond Auctioned For $50 Million

Christie's

Christie's said that renowned jeweler Harry Winston was the buyer.

The "Pink Legacy", a diamond weighing just under 19 carats, fetched a record 50.375 million Swiss francs ($50 million) as it outshone all other auction lots at Christie's in Geneva on Tuesday.

Christie's chairman for Europe, Francois Curiel, called the stone the "Leonardo da Vinci" of diamonds.

Christie's global head of jewellery, Rahul Kadakia, described The Pink Legacy as "one of the world's greatest diamonds".

The Pink Legacy, an 18.96 carat fancy vivid pink diamond once owned by Oppenheimer family is displayed on November 8, 2018 during a press preview ahead of sales by Christie's auction house in Geneva.

The auction price of the Pink Legacy diamond, sold at Christie's annual Magnificent Jewels auction, beat out the previous record price-per-carat.

Full Name of Pippa Middleton's Son Has Reportedly Leaked
Middleton married Matthews, a 43-year-old hedge fund manager and brother of British reality star Spencer Matthews, in May 2017. Pippa gave birth to her first child weighing 8lb and 9oz at the Lindo Wing, at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, on 15 October.

It's the largest fancy vivid pink diamond they've ever sold.

Christie's auction house jewellery specialist Rachel Evans-Omeyer poses with an 18.96 carat Fancy Vivid Pink Diamond on show in London on September 25, 2018 before its November auction with an estimate at USA $30 to $50 million.

"Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)" is set to be sold at the Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale at New York's Rockefeller Center on November 15 for an estimated price of $80 million.

The rectangular-cut stone was found in a South African mine around a hundred years ago and has likely not been altered since it was first cut in 1920, Christie's said.

The classic rectangular cut is traditionally used for white stones, but is rare for pink diamonds.

Finding a fancy vivid pink diamond larger than 10 carats is virtually unheard of, the auction house said.
