US halting refuelling of Saudi-led coalition aircraft in Yemen's war

Amid Saudi-led bombing Pompeo pins responsibility for starvation in Yemen… on Iran

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis in August warned that U.S. support for the coalition was "not unconditional", noting it must do "everything humanly possible to avoid any innocent loss of life".

Meanwhile, Riyadh said Friday that Saudi Arabia and its allies were able to "increase their capacity" of refueling their jets, and thus will do so independently, Reuters reported, citing Saudi Press agency.

The Saudi-led coalition that is bombing Yemen has asked for the "cessation of inflight refueling support" from the United States, a statement from the Saudi press agency said on Saturday.

There has been an worldwide outcry over Saudi actions in Yemen, particularly after a series of high-profile coalition strikes that have killed scores of civilians, many of them children.

Beyond refueling, the United States provides limited intelligence support to the Saudi-led coalition and sells it weaponry used in Yemen's war.

In August this year, he warned that United States support for the coalition was "not unconditional", noting it must do "everything humanly possible to avoid any innocent loss of life".

A total of 110 Houthi rebels have been killed in 24 hours of clashes in western Yemen's Hodeida along with 22 pro-government troops fighting to retake the port city, medical sources said on Friday.

Concerned by the rise of the Houthis, the Saudi-led military coalition launched an intervention in 2015 in the form of a massive air campaign aimed at reinstalling the deposed administration.

The latest deaths raised to 382, the number of fighters killed on both sides since the battle for Hodeida intensified on Nov 1.

That appeal came just days after the United States, in a significant shift, piled pressure on its Saudi ally to end the war by calling for a ceasefire and peace talks.

Almost 10,000 Yemenis have been killed in the conflict since 2015, according to the World Health Organization.

Human rights groups say the real death toll could be five times as high. More than 14 million Yemenis face pre-famine conditions, according to the United Nations.

David Miliband, who is a former British foreign secretary and member of parliament, said while the journalist's death was tragic, worldwide focus on Khashoggi's murder should be switched to actions of Saudi Arabia in Yemen, where millions of lives are affected.

He told them cutting off support could jeopardise cooperation on counter-terrorism and reduce American influence with Saudi Arabia.
