May promises further talks with European Union to get 'assurances' on backstop

Britain's Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd has urged MPs to find consensus on Brexit. AFP

Theresa May has hit out at Tony Blair, accusing him of "insulting" the British people and the office of prime minister by "undermining" Brexit talks with calls in Brussels for a second referendum.

Theresa May has confirmed she had a "robust discussion" with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, after footage emerged of the pair having a heated Brexit row at an EU summit.

Jeremy Hunt, the Foreign Secretary, telling Radio 4's Today Programme that it will be possible to get "a version" of the Prime Minister's Brexit deal approved by MPs.

"That is our position".

Belgium's PM Charles Michel said: "The ball is now politically in the British court".

And Mr Tusk said he had "no mandate" to organise any further negotiations.

"The prime minister pulled this important vote last week on the basis that she was going to get meaningful changes to her Brexit deal, She has obviously not".

Responding to the remarks, Mr Hunt said: "Amber is absolutely right that we need all MPs to think about the national interest".

But Mr Juncker criticised Mrs May's lack of clarity over what she was seeking from the future relationship.

Revolut secures banking licence
In April the firm reached unicorn status - a company worth more than a billion USA dollars - after it raised 250 million dollars. Fintech start-up Revolut has secured a European banking licence as it steps up preparations for a hard Brexit.

"So we would like, within a few weeks, our United Kingdom friends to set out their expectations for us because this debate is sometimes nebulous and imprecise and I would like clarifications".

The transition was reached to avoid customs checks on the border separating Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, but British lawmakers fear the European Union will string out negotiations for years and that Britain could be trapped indefinitely in the transition.

"So we would like, within a few weeks, our United Kingdom friends to set out their expectations for us because this debate is sometimes nebulous and imprecise and I would like clarifications".

The Prime Minister told the summit that a package of assurances around the backstop could "change the dynamic" at Westminster.

Speaking at the Leave Means Leave rally on Friday, the former Ukip leader said: "My message, folks, tonight is, as much as I don't want a second referendum, it would be wrong of us on a Leave Means Leave platform not to get ready, not to be prepared for a worst case scenario".

Mrs May managed a smile at her press conference when a reporter asked if she had had a "trying week", jokingly replying: 'Has something happened this week?' Mr Hunt said: "I think every MP has a corner of their heart that says they would like to have a crack at the top job".

"Negotiations like this are always tough".

Ms Rudd, who recently returned to the Cabinet as Work and Pensions Secretary, said it is possible Mrs May will ultimately be unable to persuade enough of her own MPs to back the Government's deal.

To a large extent, independently of the fact that it is hard to see how the Left would implement its plans given the changed structure of the United Kingdom and global economies, the Brexit debate has been dominated by the Right simply because it is the Conservatives who have long pushed for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union and were able to succeed in holding a referendum on the issue.
