Pakistan maintain advantage over Black Caps in topsy-turvey test

Paceman Shaheen Afridi trapped Jeet Raval for nought while Yasir Shah had Tom caught for ten

Smart money says Pakistan will triumph.

Azhar Ali hit 134 and Asad Shafiq made 104 and added 201 for the fourth wicket before New Zealand hit back with seven wickets for 62 runs.

Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, on Tuesday, announced his retirement from Test cricket on the second day of the final Test against New Zealand.

That gave Pakistan a lead of 74 runs.

Off-spinner Bilal Asif, who picked up two wickets on Monday, completed his second five-wicket haul in tests.

Paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi trapped Jeet Raval for nought while leg-spinner Yasir Shah had Tom Latham caught for ten, his 199th wicket in Tests.

Pakistan's advantage came courtesy of the two century-makers, taking them past NZ's first innings total before being separated.

In that match, Pakistan were set the seemingly simple task of scoring 176 for victory in their second innings, only to be stunningly dismissed for 171.

Azhar Ali was in sumptuous touch from the outset.

New Zealand pace bowler Trent Boult had removed the out-of-form Mohammad Hafeez and Imam-ul-Haq with only 17 runs on the board, having both openers caught by Tim Southee in the slips.

Somerville ended his first test innings with the ball with 4-75 off 36 overs, bowling well to the tail. Pakistan has not had an entirely good time when it comes down running between the wickets.

Shafiq brought up his 12th Test ton with a sharp single off Somerville before falling leg-before to Patel to a straight delivery.

New Zealand were then reduced to 26-2 at stumps with Kane Williamson unbeaten on 14 and nightwatchman Somerville on one not out to leave them trailing by 48 runs with eight wickets intact.
