And then there is the arachnoid cyst that puts pressure on the coach's brain and sometimes causes the kind of headaches that dropped him to one knee on the sidelines during the IN game earlier this season.

"No disrespect to the other bowl games, because they're awesome, but the Rose is the one we've always looked forward to", Meyer said.

While that report suggested Meyer would coach the 2019 season before stepping down, that won't be the case as Ohio State confirmed Tuesday morning that the 54-year-old Meyer will retire from coaching following the Buckeyes' appearance in this season's Rose Bowl game New Year's Day.

Ryan Day, the offensive coordinator who led the Buckeyes while Meyer was suspended for three games at the start of the season, will take over as Ohio State's new full-time head coach. This also isn't the first time Meyer has stepped away from coaching.

Recruitment: Meyer was hired as the head football coach at Ohio State on November 28, 2011.

US, China, Russia to discuss arms race halt
Trump's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had said the gathering was cancelled "because the Russians behaved in a way that is deeply inconsistent with global law".

Meyer went 82-9 in his seven seasons as Ohio State coach, including a 54-4 Big Ten record.

At Florida, he retired in similar fashion after the SEC Championship in the 2009 season, then unretired and stayed at Florida for one more year.

Meyer led the Buckeyes to an undefeated record in his first season at the helm in 2012, one in which the program was barred from a bowl game due to NCAA sanctions. He helped guide the Buckeyes to winning the first ever College Football Playoff in 2014, and he's won three Big Ten titles, with the most recent coming this season.

After beginning his head coaching career at Bowling Green, Meyer moved on to Utah and had a flawless 12-0 season in 2004 before stepping into the spotlight when he accepted the top job at Florida in 2005. In addition to the national championship he won in 2014, Meyer won two previously with the Gators by winning the BCS championship.

Recruitment: Ohio State's battle for Young came down to the local school, Maryland, and another national power in Alabama. He was the wide receivers coach at Notre Dame from 1996-2000 before moving on to his first head-coaching job, directing Bowling Green from 2001-02 before leaving for the same post at Utah.
