World urged to tackle 'urgent threats' as United Nations climate talks begin

The UN talks come at a crucial juncture in mankind's response to planetary warming

This conference was known as the Paris agreement and it was a very important moment in the climate change movement.

Attenborough's address drew on messages from people all over the world, conveying a sense of frustration over apparent global inertia toward the looming disaster of climate change.

Mr Attenborough was speaking on behalf of the UN's "people's seat" initiative to give ordinary people a voice at the global talks by gathering their thoughts, ideas and concerns through social media and polling in the past two weeks.

CNN reported on nature broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, who said at the event "the collapse of our civilizations is on the horizon".

However, US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris accord has dented trust among vulnerable nations, who fear there is not enough cash available to help them adapt to our heating planet.

Fiji's prime minister, Frank Bainimarama, who presided over last year's United Nations climate summit, said the "just transition" proposal should not just consider the fate of fossil-fuel workers but all people around the world whose lives were affected by climate change.

"I recently received government approval to develop an all-of-government plan to make Ireland a leader in responding to climate change". But the Paris agreement let countries set their own emissions targets. "Let us rise to the challenge and finish the work the world demands of us".

To inject momentum, the World Bank Group on Monday said it would provide a further $200 billion over five years from the start of the next decade.

This New Test Could Detect All Types of Cancer in Just Minutes

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a dramatic appeal to world leaders Monday to take the threat of global warming seriously and to act boldly to avert a catastrophic rise in temperatures before the end of the century.

Recent studies have shown that 20 of the past 22 years have been the warmest in recorded history, and climate change action needs to be increased fivefold if we want to have a chance to avoid catastrophic warming, which would cause permanent and irremediable damage to both human and natural environments. "For many people, regions and even countries, this is already a matter of life or death".

Organisers said on their website that they were taking to the streets of Brussels to claim their "right to an ambitious and socially just climate policy". "Climate change is running faster than we are, and we must catch up sooner rather than later before it is too late", he warned.

"Or, God forbid, [we] ignore the irrefutable evidence and become the generation that betrayed humanity", Bainimarama said. "We require deep transformations of our economies and societies". "This must be powered by multilateral co-operation".

The meeting received a boost over the weekend, after 19 major economies at the G20 summit affirmed their commitment to the 2015 Paris climate accord.

A process to enable countries to announce efforts by 2020 to ramp up their domestic ambition on cutting greenhouse gas emissions must be launched, they said, as current efforts are not enough to prevent risky temperature rises.

US President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal a year ago, stating his opinion that it was "an agreement that disadvantages the United States to the exclusive benefit of other countries".
