FDA warns of chocolate, caramel sweets potentially contaminated with hepatitis A

Bauer’s Candies Chocolate or Caramel Modjeskas purchased after Nov. 14 should not be eaten the FDA said

Bauer's Candies' modjeskas - marshmallow dipped in chocolate or caramel - are a delicacy of Kentucky, sold across the US.

While the risk of contamination is extremely low, the FDA is recommending that anyone who purchased the sweets after November 14th throw them away rather than consuming them. The sweets were sold exclusively online and through QVC.

The FDA said they are working with the company on a voluntary recall of the products.

Certain sweets made by a company in Kentucky could be contaminated with hepatitis A, a highly contagious infection that typically affects the liver, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a recent warning to consumers.

The FDA noted that so far, no cases of hepatitis A have been linked to consumption of the sweets.

NW teacher suspended over alleged racial separation in class
Parents had dropped their children off on Wednesday morning for their first day of school at Schweizer-Reneke primary school. Currently, the situation at the school is reportedly tense.

"An investigation by our local health department and the FDA found that the risk of contamination to the candy made during this time is extremely low".

While the risk of contracting hepatitis A is low, the FDA advised consumers who purchased the affected sweets to consult a doctor, especially if they are not vaccinated against hepatitis A.

Officials said a worker in the facility tested positive for hepatitis A and all sweets purchased after November 14 should be thrown away and not eaten. It is a contagious liver disease and is usually spread when a person ingests fecal matter.

People infected with HAV may not have symptoms until 15 to 50 days after exposure.

Symptoms - which include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dark urine - can take anywhere from two to seven weeks after exposure to appear.
