Indonesia finds Lion Air jet’s cockpit voice recorder

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet plunged into the Java Sea just minutes after taking off from Jakarta killing all 189 people on board

Navy divers have recovered the cockpit voice recorder of a Lion Air jet that crashed into the Java Sea in October, Indonesian officials said Monday, in a possible boost to the investigation into why the 2-month-old plane nosedived at high velocity, killing all 189 people on board.

Haryo Satmiko, deputy chief of Indonesia's transport safety committee (KNKT), was quoted by Reuters as saying that the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) had been found "but we have not received information of the location yet".

Investigators brought in a navy ship for a renewed search effort on Jan 8 to find the cockpit voice recorder after the plane crashed into the Java Sea in October.

Relatives of those who had died questioned why the plane had been cleared to fly after suffering problems on its Bali to Jakarta flight on October 28 that included a rapid descent after take-off that terrified passengers.

He said the voice recorder's signal, created to last 90 days following a crash, would have stopped in about 15 days.

Despite the name, black boxes are usually bright orange with reflective stripes, and all commercial planes are obliged to have them on board.

Cargo plane crashes in Iran, multiple fatalities
Another official told Fars that 10 people were on board and that they were all feared killed. State TV said rescue teams had been sent to the area, between the airports of Fath and Payam.

The main body of the aircraft has never been found.

Black box data help explain almost 90 percent of all crashes, according to aviation experts.

Indonesia's aviation safety record has improved since its airlines, including national carrier Garuda, were subject to years-long bans from U.S. and European airspace for safety violations, but the country still recorded more than three dozen fatal accidents over the past 15 years.

The discovery of the device Monday, more than two months after the crash, is a significant breakthrough for investigators trying to piece together the final moments of the brand-new Boeing 737.

Lion Air is one of Indonesia's youngest airlines but has grown rapidly, flying to dozens of domestic and worldwide destinations.

Black box data showed the plane also had an airspeed indicator issue on multiple earlier flights.
