Kris Bryant signs pre-arbitration contract with Cubs

Dennis Wierzbicki- USA Today Sports

Even on a day when the Cubs avoided arbitration with all seven of their eligible players, they couldn't avoid another round of swift public backlash over troubled shortstop Addison Russell and a contract that provides a way for him to recoup money lost while serving an unpaid suspension for domestic violence. Because he won't be paid while he serves the remainder of his 40-game suspension, the bonus means he can make up to $3.4 million if he's on the roster for the rest of the season.

But Russell can make up to $600,000 in bonuses if he remains on the roster for 150 days.

Kris Bryant agreed to a $12.9 million, one-year deal, a raise from $10.85 million. Baez settled for $5.2 million in his first year of eligibility, a $4.6 million raise from 2018, when he finished second in National League Most Valuable Player voting. But a wild-card loss to Colorado was unsatisfying after three straight trips to the NL Championship Series and a drought-busting World Series championship in 2016.

For his career, he has batted.285 with 107 homers and 326 RBIs. He made $605,000 in 2018 and hit.238 with 26 home runs, but only one came off a left-handed pitcher.

The failure of the radio system added to the chaos that included SWAT teams not knowing where to land their helicopters. Peterson was in a position to engage Cruz and mitigate further harm to others, and he willfully decided not to do so.

Montgomery, who made $611,250 a year ago, played a critical role in the Cubs' 95-win season when he left the bullpen to make a career-high 19 starts with a 3.69 ERA, filling in for the injured Yu Darvish and ineffective Tyler Chatwood. The right-hander was 8-2 with a 2.51 ERA in his final 12 outings. He was 14-11 with a 3.44 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 199 innings across 33 starts in 2018. Edwards had a career-low 2.60 ERA in 58 games, though he had 12 walks in 11 appearances in September.

Outfielder Kyle Schwarber agreed to a 3.39-million deal for 2019.

Friday was the deadline to submit salary numbers for arbitration.
