Mets, deGrom agree to $17 million, 1-year contract

What does Jacob deGrom’s record-breaking raise mean for an extension

While the New York Yankees were unable to agree with all arbitration-eligible players (Luis Severino will be heading to arbitration), the Mets settled with all six, including big names like Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.

The deal was agreed to Friday afternoon, just hours before the pitcher and team were set to exchange proposed salaries in arbitration and have a judge settle the matter for 2019. His $9.6 million raise from $7.4 million in 2018 to $17 million this year is a record arbitration raise. The $9.6 million pay bump is the highest in arbitration history, edging out the $9.5 million raise that the Red Sox just gave Mookie Betts earlier Friday.

The Mets avoided arbitration with all their eligible players this year.

Syndergaard, doubling his salary, agreed to a $6 million deal. He had 269 strikeouts, although poor run support led to an unspectacular 10-9 record. The Mets could easily tack another four or five years onto this contract and secure deGrom's long term future in Queens, and those talks should now continue over the next few months.

Although, the appointment of the new general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, who was deGrom's agent before taking this job ushers the possibility of NY being open to a long term deal. Talks could take place soon, though Van Wagenen has said he'll recuse himself from negotiations involving deGrom to avoid a conflict of interest.

Russia: There’re no talks on setting up spy swap involving Paul Whelan
Russian Federation has still not provided any details of the charge against Whelan. He noted, however, that Whelan could only be traded once he has been convicted.

- DeGrom had the second lowest ERA in baseball since 1996, the first full season after the last work stoppage. Past year he missed time with a finger injury and an illness, finishing with 155 strikeouts and 39 walks in 154 1/3 innings.

BRAVES: Atlanta agreed to a $5,475,000, one-year deal with Mike Foltynewicz, avoiding arbitration with the All-Star right-hander. He was also a member of the Mets' 2015 World Series team.

Finally healthy again last season, Wheeler ($5,975,000) is coming off a breakout performance in the second half.

Zack Wheeler, who beat the Mets in arbitration last winter, avoided it this time around. He is expected to become a free agent after the upcoming season. The lefty struck out 152 and walked 58 in a career-high 154 innings. Matz agreed to $2,625,000, his salary past year was $577,000.

Outfielder Michael Conforto agreed to a $4.025 million contract.
