New Beer Labels On Hold During Government Shutdown

Neil Herbst is an owner of one of Alberta's oldest craft breweries Alley Kat

The breweries can still sell new beers in the state, but they are missing out on out-of-state sales until the shutdown ends.

But since the government shut down, labels aren't getting approved right now.

USA -based breweries have become an unexpected casualty of the federal government shutdown.

That's because workers inside the federal bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms have been furloughed.

Cameron, who makes close to 20 varieties of beer in his Bloomfield brewery said he and fellow beer makers all over the country will have to exercise some patience moving forward. That breaks down to over 3,000 applications coming in every week. Katchever and his team brewed something special for their big anniversary party. We're going to take the next couple of minutes to talk about one of them - the craft beer industry.

The TTB is one arm of the US government that is crippled right now amidst President Trump's ongoing partial government shutdown, which on Friday tied for the longest shutdown ever at 21 days.

Poland mayor in very serious condition after being stabbed on stage
According to Wyborcza , the attacker had grabbed a microphone and told the crowd that he was held in prison despite his innocence. The horrific incident took place at an annual charity event collecting money for Polish medical facilities.

However it will be impacted as soon as the government opens back up because it's going to take the TTB a while to catch up.

Paul Gatza, director of the Brewers Association, estimates half of the craft breweries in the US are in a similar position.

Head Brewers like Snyder can still submit their labels to the TTB; there just aren't any employees there to review or approve them.

Williams says the shutdown is also delaying the Brick Works Brewing and Eats opening in Long Neck.

PAUL GATZA: Any products that need those government approvals are just kind of frozen on hold. "So the opportunity cost of what's sitting in that tank, we're not able to send it out and we're not able to fill that tank back up with another beer". "[It] doesn't matter what the size of the company is; when nobody's answering the phone, the work stops and it really puts the beer industry at a disadvantage", Purser said.
