New software can track down users who share Netflix accounts illegally

But it is no secret that many users of the service share their password with family, friends or significant others so they can indulge in Netflix's deluge of content. That might be an outright ban on the account or just a sternly-worded email telling them to pay for a premium account.

While Synamedia says it will help providers shut down large-scale, for-profit account sharing run by fraudsters, regular users will also be targeted for "upselling".

Synamedia's AI software analyzes which users are logged in at any current moment and then flag those accounts that are being shared, the Daily Mail reports.

Recent research from Magid found that roughly a quarter of millennials share their username and password for video streaming services with friends.

A Synamedia spokesman reportedly said "casual credentials sharing is becoming too expensive to ignore".

Meanwhile Parks Associates predicts that by 2021, $9.9billion of pay-tv revenues and $1.2billion of streaming revenues will be lost to password sharing.

Synamedia aims to crack down on password sharers with a new system that streaming services can pay to access.

Saudi teen runaway in Bangkok is 'legitimate refugee'
The teenager fears her family will kill her if she returns home after she renounced Islam and fled while on holiday in Bahrain . On Sunday Ms Qunun told AFP her family was "abusive" and once locked her in a room for six months just for cutting her hair.

The system could let the company operating it specify how many users should be able to use a single account, which comes in handy for various family plans.

What the technology can do is figure out where fraudulent activity is coming from, tracking exactly where accounts are being wrongly used.

For example, it checks what content you're watching in what location. Our new solution gives operators the ability to take action.

'It's a great way to keep honest people honest while benefiting from an incremental revenue stream'.

While, according to Netflix, "the number of users that can stream at the same time will depend on your Netflix plan", those who pass on their credentials unlawfully can be chased and identified by an algorithm used by Synamedia.
