Oklahoma Backup QB Austin Kendall Enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Austin Kendall surprised many in Norman when his name was reportedly spotted in the NCAA transfer portal on Friday afternoon.

Why would Kendall - seemingly in line to be the Sooners' QB1 this spring - leave a program that just produced consecutive Heisman-winning quarterbacks? He has spent most of his time backing up a pair of Heisman winners in Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray.

Reigning Heisman Trophy victor Kyler Murray has not announced that he is not returning to the Sooners but he is expected to either play professional baseball or enter the NFL Draft. Oklahoma could explore adding a graduate transfer, like Alabama's Jalen Hurts. Now, he appears ready for a fresh start. Kendall graduated last month, meaning he can transfer and play immediately with two seasons of eligibility.

If Kendall does leave, it could spell trouble for the Sooners under center.

Croatia defender Lovren banned over social media outburst against Spain
It featured Lovren mocking Spain and appearing to hint he deliberately stuck Spain's Sergio Ramos with his elbow. Liverpool fans love the jibe at Real Madrid captain but it eventually landed Lovern in trouble.

Rattler will be on the team next year but won't arrive until the summer, making it unlikely he'd be able to get into the mix to be the starter to begin next season with Murray nearly certain to leave for either professional baseball or football.

Lincoln Riley's offense can do wonders for a quarterback, but with talented QB Tanner Mordecai already pushing Kendall this offseason and the arrival of the top quarterback in the nation in Spencer Rattler, Kendall saw the writing on the wall. But as things now stand, it could be a big year for this Sooners freshman.

A Murray return may be more than most OU fans could possibly hope for with the multi-sport athlete drawing first-round possibilities in the National Football League draft, but this does make for an intriguing weekend with the deadline to declare looming on Monday. Kendall completed 28 of 39 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns without an interception at Oklahoma.
