Maroon 5 will take the stage for the Pepsi Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show alongside Travis Scott and Big Boi, the National Football League announced on Sunday.

Performing at the Super Bowl now amounts to an endorsement of the NFL's policies, and sources tell Variety that multiple artists of color - including Cardi B (who is featured on Maroon 5's recent hit "Girls Like You"), Outkast, Mary J. Blige, Usher and Nicki Minaj - were considered or approached to perform with Maroon 5.

Typically one of the most fiercely sought gigs in music, the Super Bowl has this year been the subject of boycott and protest. "And the rumor is a rumor that everyone seems to be discussing", he said.

Maroon 5's performance will come during a break of their Red Pill Blues tour, before they head off to Australia in late February.

The band's sixth and most recent studio album, Red Pill Blues, was released in November 2017. Sources also previously told ET that Rihanna turned down the huge gig due to the controversy surrounding NFL players who kneel on the field during the national anthem to protest racial inequality and police brutality.

Aphria chief executive and co-founder stepping aside from executive roles
Aphria's report did not acknowledge the recent announcement of a hostile takeover bid by US -based retailer Green Growth Brands. In the three months to November 30, it booked $22-million in net revenue, selling 3,409 kilograms of cannabis.

The announcement, which was also shared by CBS Sports, the network broadcasting the event, comes after rumours began circulating late previous year that Maroon 5 would take the stage.

Scott recently performed on a song with Migos rapper Quavo called "Huncho Jack" that references Kaepernick: "Take a knee like the 'Niners (Kaepernick) /Join the team, don't divide us (join them)", the line goes.

"I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in", Scott said in a statement. "I mean, I haven't seen that much on it besides the headlines and the click-bait and all that good stuff, but hopefully it doesn't work out".

Super Bowl LIII kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 3 from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
