Business Voice: Opening up around mental health in the workplace

Time To Talk? Half Of Brits Don't Talk To Friends In Real Life Because Of Social Media

Research this Time to Talk Day shows social media is affecting our ability to have deeper conversations with our loved ones.

Kimberley Clay, PR coordinator at E G Carter & Co Ltd said: "If we can get our employees to spend just 10 minutes supporting one another around issues regarding mental health then we are slowly but surely breaking that stigma".

The focus for Time to Talk Day this year is on having deeper conversations with friends and family instead of the "surface level" conversations on group chats and social media.

"Social media can be an awesome, connective place but a "like", or even hundreds of "likes", can't replace conversation", she said.

Baby left on Ohio train as father steps out to smoke
Transit police and RTA staff responded quickly and returned to the station to reunite the man and his baby. Before the father could react, the doors slid shut and began to roll away from Windermere Station.

"I wasn't sure they'd understand why I shared something so personal as social media can be a very superficial place - full of memes", he explained. "The majority of people come to these conversations wanting to make things better, but are paralysed by the fear of making things worse", he says. To know that they were there not just online but also offline was so comforting and healing.

The vouchers will be included in Time to Change's "Chatter Boxes" - physical boxes filled with resources, tips and tricks created to facilitate conversation around mental health, and distributed to thousands of workplaces and community groups around the UK.

Today is officially Time to Talk Day, as part of a campaign to encourage people to speak openly about mental health issues. A year ago I chose to be really honest with my followers and talk candidly about struggling with depression on Instagram. The support I received and the messages people sent meant the world. Celebrity supporters include Frankie Bridge, Dame Kelly Holmes, Dr Ranj Singh and Matt Johnson. This corporate apathy felt by employees arrives at a time when awareness of mental health issues in the United Kingdom is on the rise.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes teamed up with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Alberta South Region during Tuesday night's Western Hockey League game against the Regina Pats to raise awareness about the importance of mental health within the sporting community. 80% of respondents said they had noticed an overall increase in awareness of mental health generally in the United Kingdom, however a staggering 62% said they noticed no change in the levels of awareness in the workplace. However, what's really made a difference when it comes to tackling the taboo around mental health and encouraging people to speak out is our Mental Health Allies Programme.
