Dani Alves: Time for PSG to win Champions League

'We need to step up our level': Solskjaer urges United to learn from PSG defeat

Tuesday's defeat by Paris St-Germain should not define Manchester United's season, or decide whether interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gets the job permanently.

In the absence of Cavani and Neymar, former United winger Angel Di Maria will be forced to step up on his first return to Old Trafford since moving to PSG in 2016 for £44.3m. This considered, United's frustration that the referee then chose to send Paul Pogba off (he'll now miss the return in Paris) for a second bookable offence in the closing stages was obvious.

Starting XI: De Gea (7); Young (7), Bailly (7), Lindelof (6), Shaw (7); Matic (8*), Herrera (6), Pogba (4); Lingard (5), Martial (6), Rashford (7).

United were impressive in the first half, without creating much in front of goal.

They soaked up United's pressure and early high tempo.

"Paris Saint-Germain played with five midfielders and they never lost the ball".

Sure, this isn't Glastonbury Festival, but at least United fans will appreciate PSG supporters putting on an unbelievable moment with one of their stewards.

They looked timid in the first period, seemingly afraid to take the game to the Red Devils in the fear, but they left any trepidation in the changing rooms as they came out firing after the interval to swing the balance of the tie heavily in their favour thanks to two vital away goals.

United's big names ultimately did not perform when it mattered.

It made a bad situation worse for United since he will now miss the second leg due to suspension.

Solskjaer was in no mood to pull his punches with the Chilean, saying: "I can't do anything about Alexis Sanchez". I couldn't say any chance from open play. He was so frustrated with his inability to get forward effectively or dictate play from deep that he ended up getting himself sent off late on.

Booed and jeered by a normally magnanimous home crowd, Di Maria's speed and skill stung as he put his former employers to the sword.

"If you tease him then it does not make him weaker", said his manager Thomas Tuchel.

"United were set up to counter attack.", Neville added.

When this tie was announced, Manchester United were 11/5 to win this match with Ladbrokes, who priced PSG at 11/10 and the draw at 12/5. But if you can win the Champions it will be welcome.

"We grew again in this match", said Tuchel.

Solskjaer launched his spell at the helm with an inviting run of fixtures, and a trip to Crystal Palace, who now sit just three points clear of the relegation zone, could prove welcome after games against PSG, Chelsea and Liverpool.

"It's a hard mountain to climb but it's not impossible", said Solskjaer.

Marquinhos was excellent for the men from the French capital against United.
