Donald Trump to sign executive order advancing artificial intelligence strategy

US President Donald Trump ordered the government to give greater priority to artificial intelligence but critics said the executive order lacked key details

The order, which comes amid concerns about China's ambitions to dominate the sector and the likelihood of disruption for workers as the technology automates millions of jobs, doesn't outline specific funding goals, but says it aims to ensure that AI develops in a manner that reflects U.S. values and to push training for the future workforce.

"It is the policy of the United States Government to sustain and enhance the scientific, technological, and economic leadership position of the United States in AI R&D and deployment through a coordinated Federal Government strategy, the American AI Initiative".

The measure is little more than symbolic.

Experts in the field of artificial intelligence have expressed growing concern that China is advancing plans for global AI dominance, and that the US needs to catch up.

"AI is something that touches every aspect of people's lives", a senior administration official said on a conference call, recently.

Ivanka Trump and Chris Liddell, a former Microsoft chief financial officer who is now a deputy chief of staff to the president, planned to attend the signing ceremony, according to a statement the White House issued in advance.

Monday's order envisions regulatory guidance to ensure the technology is trustworthy, said the White House official.

Williams will present its 2019 livery and new title sponsor later this afternoon, before Renault takes centre stage on Tuesday. The second Toro Rosso auto to be designed around the Honda power unit, the STR14 was launched online via a video on Monday.

Research and development: Federal funding agencies will be asked to "prioritize AI investments" in their allocations. AI researchers will need to have computer models, computing resources, and federal data to kickstart projects.

Global links: The US will collaborate on AI with other nations, but ensure that it develops in a way that works with American "values and interests".

Trump's EO focuses on maintaining the country's research and development on cutting-edge technology to benefit Americans.

Artificial intelligence is seen as a way to generate advancements across multiple fields, from defense to health care to transportation.

Vivek Wadhwa, distinguished fellow at Carnegie Mellon University, discusses how the expansion of artificial intelligence may affect USA employment.

The order notes that the U.S. "must train current and future generations of American workers with the skills to develop and apply AI technologies to prepare them for today's economy and jobs of the future", pointing to the "heads of implementing agencies" to prioritize grants "within existing Federal fellowship and service programs". That includes high school, undergraduate and graduate fellowships, alternative education and training programs and other scholarships.
