Efficient Medvedev proves too strong for Fucsovics

ATP Sofia Daniil Medvedev tops Marton Fucsovics to win the title

"I was the better player today and I deserved to win", Medvedev said.

World number 47 Fucsovics battled past Italian giant-killer Matteo Berrettini 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 to progress to his second ATP final.

Medvedev sprinted out of the games and dominated Monfils in a lopsided opening set that saw the Russian win all ten second-serve return points as he broke twice on six opportunities and saved all three break points he faced.

Medvedev came out of the blocks fast and Klizan could not cope with the big-hitting Russian, who fired nine aces during his comfortable 6-4, 6-1 win without offering up a single break point.

Berrettini's semi-final opponent is to be Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, who made it to the last four on his 27th birthday after fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut, the Sofia Open victor in 2016, withdrew before the quarter-finals due to illness.

French seventh seed Pierre-Hugues Herbert downed Czech Tomas Berdych 6-2, 7-5 to set up an all-French final with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier Saturday. The young Russian lost the opening set against Robin Haase in the second round but he never looked back after that, winning the following eight sets and going all the way for the first success in 2019 after three titles claimed in the previous season.

This is set to be the first time that Gael Monfils and Daniil Medvedev will be playing each other at an ATP event.

Berdych, who is unseeded at the tournament he won in 2012, then turned the match around.

The seventh seed overcame the world number 12 Tsitsipas, in straight sets in their quarter-final that was played Friday.

Monfils will now take on Radu Albot in the semi-final, after the Romanian got the better of Marcos Baghdatis in another quarter-final match.
