Ford announced Wednesday it is recalling 1.5 million of its best-selling F-150 pickup trucks due to a glitch in its transmission system that can lead to accidents. The trucks have a transmission issue that "may experience an intermittent loss of the transmission output speed sensor signal to the powertrain control module", which could cause the truck to shift into first gear. To date, Ford is aware of five accidents related to the issue. The sudden downshift in the gears could cause owners to lose control of their vehicle. Dealers will update the powertrain control software and the company will notify customers next month.
Ford's F-Series pickup is the top-selling vehicle in both Canada and United States.
Trucks in this recall were built in Dearborn from April 28, 2010 through October 28, 2013 or Kansas City from May 18, 2010 through November 18, 2013. The recall reference number is No. 19S07.
Also impacted- by separate issues-were select Lincoln Continentals made between 2017 and 2019, and certain 2019 Ford Mustangs, Lincoln Nautiluses, and Lincoln Navigators. Ford says door latches on some 27,0000 vehicles might not engage, meaning they could open while driving.
Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries resulting from this condition. Dealers will remove and replace the door latches. The Ford reference number for this recall is 19S03. That's happening with certain 2019 Mustangs, Lincoln Nautilus and Lincoln Navigators, so a total of 4,200 should be brought in for service.
Dealers will update the instrument panel cluster software.
Affected 2017-19 Lincoln Continental vehicles were built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant, Nov. 30, 2015 to Nov. 14, 2018. The Ford reference number for this recall is 19C03.
