Fourth Hottest Year On Record, Says NASA

Earth’s long-term warming trend can be seen in this visualization of NASA’s global temperature record which shows how the planet’s temperatures are changing over time compared to a baseline average from 1951 to 1980. The record is shown as a runni

In the study, NASA says that the global temperatures in 2018 were the fourth warmest since 1880, and it was 0.83°C warmer than the 1951 to 1980 mean.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released a 2018 climate assessment Wednesday, and the temperatures continue to climb.

According to NOAA findings, Europe in particular experienced its "warmest year on record", as many countries, including France, Germany and Switzerland, dealt with their hottest 12 months in recent history.

2018 is the fourth hottest year ever recorded, according to data collected by NASA.

The report is the latest installment of a yearly analysis that compares the two agencies' independent global temperature measurements with historical data.

"It's been hot", said Gavin Schmidt, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS).

NASA clarified that it gathers its measurements from "6,300 weather stations, ship- and buoy-based observations of sea surface temperatures, and temperature measurements from Antarctic research stations". It was the fourth highest since 1880, the earliest year for which records are available.

Bankruptcy judge gives Sears another chance to survive
Lampert, through his hedge fund, ESL Investments, presented the only bid for the company to keep it afloat, according to Reuters. James Bromley, ESL's attorney, said the disagreement can be settled in future negotiations after the deal closes.

"If you smooth out these year-to-year variations and look at the big picture, the overall trend in the past few decades is one of accelerating change", said Alex Hall, who directs the Center for Climate Science at UCLA and was not involved in either government analysis.

Those major disasters, plus other smaller-scale disasters, made 2018 the fourth-most costly year on-record.

Americans escaped the worst of it last year though; while the rest of the planet cooked, the USA experienced only its 14th-warmest year. The WMO said heightened temperatures also contributed to a number of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts and flash flooding. We're no longer talking about a situation where global warming is something in the future.

Since then, there's been a clear and sharp upward trend - in fact, NOAA says that every year since 1977 has had an above-average temperature. Deathly record lows are real in the U.S., but don't be fooled by the cooling that we have been witnessing, global warming is real also.

"People place way too much emphasis on a single year, usually to re-enforce a story, or a narrative, they have in their mind, already", he said. Taalas said that the deadly cold snap was entirely consistent with the effects of manmade climate change, including the warming of the poles.

Also in 2018, the United States suffered 14 weather and climate disasters with costs surpassing $1 billion during a warmer- and wetter-than-average year, NOAA reports.

"The planet is warming".
