Google Reportedly Planning Cheaper Smartphone to Bring Users into Its Ecosystem

Google Pixel

The report underscores some of the rumors that have already been floating around regarding the search giant's product plans for 2019. Thanks to a new report from Nikkei Asian Review, we now have an early look at what to expect from Google in 2019. Google also experimented with Android One platform for entry-level phones in India.

In the global smartphone market, Google's share is quite low.

Google will launch its first non-premium smartphone model with a more budget-friendly price point to appeal to more customers in emerging markets. The smartphone is likely to be a part of the rumoured Pixel 3 Lite-Series that is expected to debut as the inferior smartphone range alongside the Pixel 3 family that was launched a year ago.

Googles mid-range Pixel is perhaps the companys worst kept secret when a prototype got into the hands of a Russian YouTuber – the same one who posted a full hands-on of the Pixel 3 XL weeks before it was announced in October.

"The new phone will be the spearhead of Google's drive to expand the hardware using its operating systems", reads the report.

US House Passes Resolution to End Involvement in Yemen War
The US House of Representatives has overwhelmingly approved a resolution to end Washington's support for the Saudi war in Yemen . The vote would not be enough, however, to overcome Trump's promised veto of the war powers resolution.

Along with the new Pixel phones, Google is apparently working on a new Google Home speaker. Android Police believes Google will take the wraps off a new Google Home Hub smart display with a larger screen - potentially closer to the 10-inch display seen on the rival Amazon Echo Show. When not on sale, the Pixel 3 starts at $999 CAD.

The company will purportedly not be abandoning its premium line and will launch premium variants of the Google Pixel 4 as normal. It's not clear what's expected to change on the new Home speaker, however.

According to blog 9to5Google, the smartwatch was planned for the October 2018 event, but had to be delayed at the last minute. Now, it seems, Google is looking to address that once more.

Nikkei doesn't specify the pricing of the new device, just that it will come it at under $749 where the iPhone XR is.

"By contrast, Google Pixel bucked the downtrend and increased its United States smartphone shipments by an impressive 43 percent YoY during the quarter".
