May to promise more Brexit debates in push for more negotiating time

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar ahead of talks with Northern Ireland's five main political parties at the Irish Goverment residence in Belfast

Theresa May is expected to pledge in the Commons this week that MPs will get another say on Brexit if she can not recommend a revised plan this month.

Writing in the Sunday Times, shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer said Labour had drafted an amendment which, if successful, would guarantee that a vote on the Brexit options is held by the end of February.

He said the move was necessary to stop Mrs May "running down the clock".

The head of business lobby group the Confederation of British Industry warned that the chances of Britain leaving the European Union next month without a deal have increased and the country has now entered "the emergency zone".

Labour's Brexit policy chief Keir Starmer told the Sunday Times newspaper that his party would seek to use the debate in parliament this week to prevent May from waiting until the last minute to come back with a deal, and compel her to present a fresh accord for lawmakers to consider before February 26.

'You would have a hard border, very hard border.

If Mrs May does not succeed by the end of the month, MPs will be told they can put forward alternatives such as extending the deadline for the UK's departure from the European Union from 29 March.

Super League would have cost big clubs their popularity - Ceferin
While long-standing UEFA-FIFA tensions have continued with these leaders, both first elected in 2016, Ceferin spoke warmly of another ally.

He accused May of "pretending to make progress" over issues such as the Irish border so she could "run down the clock" to force MPs to choose between her deal and no deal.

The former Labour leader told Sky News' Sophy Ridge On Sunday: "No one could responsibly propose (a no-deal Brexit). So the uncertainty is not something that will happen in early April, it is something that is with us".

Last week, the passing of the Brady amendment, which called for "alternative arrangements" to the Irish backstop, paved the way for Theresa May to have another trip to Brussels in an attempt to renegotiate her Brexit deal that suffered a historic defeat in Parliament. "There needs to be a day when parliament says "that's it, enough is enough".

As many as 53 percent of respondents believe that UK Prime Minister Theresa May should delay Brexit opening door either for a second referendum or for continuation of talks with Brussels.

He added: "For the country to do that, as Theresa May want to do - to leave without knowing what Brexit you get - this would be, in my view, an incredibly foolish thing for the country to do".

"You've got to decide which of those Brexits you want before we leave - otherwise, we're going to leave without clarity".
