Scientists have known since the 1950s that the spiral-shaped Milky Way's disk is warped, bending by thousands of light-years at its outskirts.
Our Milky Way galaxy's disk of stars is anything but stable and flat.
Professor Richard de Grijs, one of the astronomers from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, said: 'We usually think of spiral galaxies as being quite flat, like Andromeda, which you can easily see through a telescope'.
The 1,339 stars are all Cepheid variables, a type of pulsating star whose intrinsic brightness depends on how long it takes to vary from bright to dim and back again.
In other words, the further the stars, the more spread out they will be. Astronomers from Macquarie University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have used 1339 "standard" stars to map the real shape of our home galaxy in a paper published in Nature Astronomy today. Since a Cepheid's period tells astronomers how bright the star truly is, measuring how bright it appears lets astronomers draw an accurate distance map.
This isn't completely abnormal, because astronomers have noticed the same pattern of progressively twisting spirals in about a dozen other galaxies.

Prof de Grijs said: 'Somewhat to our surprise, we found in 3D our collection of 1,339 Cepheid stars and the Milky Way's gas disc follow each other closely.
But the research solidifies something that you might not know about our galaxy-if you picture it as a attractive, flat spiral akin to images of Andromeda, it's time to repaint that picture as a floppy, curved disk of stars and gas.
This is where hundreds of billions of stars can be found - together with a huge mass of dark matter. But as you move toward the outermost reaches of the galaxy, the gravitational glue of the centre fades.
However, the pull of gravity becomes weaker far away from the Milky Way's inner regions. In the far outer disc hydrogen atoms making up most of the galaxy are no longer confined to a thin plane.
The Milky Way turned out to be progressively twisted in its outer areas, which is most likely caused by the powerful rotating forces released by the galaxy's massive internal disk, according to the research.
The new findings echo observations made over the last half century by scientists which indicated that gas clouds in the outer Milky Way were warped in shape.
"This new morphology provides a crucial updated map for studies of our galaxy's stellar motions and the origins of the Milky Way's disk", said Licai Deng, senior researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
A newly discovered star is thought to be one of the oldest in the Milky Way. You can see their final plot in the video below, published in Nature Astronomy.
Scientists at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) in Spain believe that it might have formed about 300 million years after the "Big Bang".
It's the first time that a map was built using young stars - and the first measurement of how twisted our home galaxy is.
Representative Tulsi Gabbard kicked off her 2020 Presidential campaign outside the Hilton Hawaiian Village Saturday afternoon. She says terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and the Islamic State group are stronger than before the Sept.11 terrorist attacks.
This first patch brings with it "a number of bug fixes and other small improvements" that weren't able to be fixed before release. It'll be easier to skip battle scenes, but more hard to accidentally end your turn before you've actually completed it.
Further, in a freakish press conference, Northam admitted he had previously worn blackface as part of a Michael Jackson costume. Many of us have had issues in the past", Johnson said. "He should step down and allow the Commonwealth to begin healing".
Some have called it a prime example of toxic masculinity , and many have called out the racist nature of his actions. The actor was the target of social media outrage after he commented on the #MeToo movement.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 37.8 million Americans smoked cigarettes as of 2016. Creagan says taxes and other regulations have slowed down tobacco use, but they have not stopped the problem.
They then fed a machine-learning algorithm the male sample data to establish a relationship between age and brain metabolism. They used the women's data as a baseline, and estimated the men's ages based exclusively on their metabolism data.
She claimed a White House usher was sacked over her mishandling of the transportation of his tanning bed to the White House. Other theories have been floated to explain Trump's skin color, including tanning beds, spray tan, and make-up.
Since the 1970s, they have thinned and retreated, and the area covered by snow and snowfall has sharply decreased. The Paris Agreement, which was first signed in 2015, is an global agreement to control and limit climate change.
A Russian couple have been arrested after footage went viral on Facebook showing a four-month-old baby being swung by its legs. The video clip, filmed in Malaysia , shows a man dangling the baby girl by her feet and hoisting her roughly into the air.
The reported intruder, 30-year-old Andrew Clyde Swofford, lived in the unnamed student's closet and would often wear her clothing. The student also reported missing items of clothing from her wardrobe, and odd handprints being left behind her bathroom wall.
HMV rescue deal to save 100 stores
But the deal will see the major High Street name close 27 stores, while also saving around 100 outlets. Putman bought several of HMV Canada stores when the brand went into administration in 2017.
Eight Killed by Avalanches in Italy this Weekend
On Saturday, drivers were stuck for hours on a highway that leads into Austria after heavy snow caused a 7.5-mile traffic jam. A series of avalanches in the Alps over the weekend killed at least 10 people, emergency services and media reported.
Energizer to unveil new phone with a massive 18000mAh battery
Additionally, other design possibilities include thin bezels, a foldable smartphone, and devices that feature pop-up cameras. Of the expected devices, two are expected to spot pop-up cameras, kinda like what we saw with the Vivo Apex previous year .
