‘New Zealand exists!’ Consternation on Twitter after Ikea leaves country off map

Ikea 'Phasing Out' Decorative Map After Forgetting To Include New Zealand

Reddit user Jibble666 shared an image of the USD$43 BJORKSTA world map to r/MapsWithoutNZ - a subreddit dedicated to collecting the frequent instances where New Zealand is left off world maps - on Thursday after spotting the mistake in a Washington D.C. Ikea outlet store.

The furniture store has admitted responsibility.

In a statement to Insider, an IKEA spokesperson said, "IKEA is responsible for securing correct and compliant motifs on all our products".

"We will take the necessary actions and the product is now being phased out from our stores".

It also isn't even the first Ikea map to make the mistake as the country is missing from a wall decal map in some shops, though elsewhere it appears to be included.

You can buy a multi-colored map from IKEA, so that the entire world is hanging above your sofa-with the exception of New Zealand, that is.

Kiwis have long complained about their country being excluded from world maps.

Cardi B Twerks on a Piano During Electrifying 2019 Grammys Performance
As the award was announced, Cardi's face said it all. "Oh, the nerves are so bad". She also thanked several of her collaborators, including J Balvin and Bad Bunny.

"I have no doubt that a trained cartographer had no involvement in the creation of these products for Ikea", Lovell Johns Ltd's Liz Murray wrote.

A commenter on the Reddit post questioned: "Wonder if they're going to sell these maps in the new Auckland store". Ikea did not immediately respond to Newsweek's request for comment.

An Ikea map poster, minus New Zealand (off Reddit).

"New Zealand, where the bloody hell are ya?"

But others took it in positive stride, with one user stating that New Zealand is "out of this world".

A third cheekily said: 'To be fair to Ikea, it ain't hard to forget about New Zealand'.

Questioning who is behind the plot to remove New Zealand from the map, Darby told Ardern he believes New Zealand has been taken off the map because "Australia want our tourists, England want to get rid of the All Blacks, and the wine industry can't beat our pinot or sav".
