Shannon Gabriel banned for four ODIs after exchange with Joe Root

Seamer Keemo Paul struck with the first ball of the day

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel felt the heat in more ways than one. But he was charged by the on-field umpires, Kumar Dharmasena and Rod Tucker, under article 2.13 of the code of conduct that covers "language of a personal, insulting, obscene and/or offensive nature".

"Don't use it as an insult", Root added.

England's travelling supporters in the Caribbean had the ideal riposte for West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel after he allegedly aimed a homophobic slur at Joe Root during the third Test.

Root has earned widespread praise for responding to Gabriel by saying: 'Don't use that as an insult. "There's nothing wrong with being gay", Root appeared to say, before turning his back on the fiery quick. As a player you feel you have responsibilities to uphold on the field and I stand by what I did.

Root said: 'The ICC have got to handle things and I am not in a position to comment but throughout the series it has been played in the right manner between the two sides.

One person wrote: "What a legend". We are sick and exhausted of reminding them that you have to respect Test cricket and can't blow teams away in one session with the bat.

"There's no room for homophobia on or off the cricket pitch which is why I applaud what Joe Root did".

Michelle Obama’s text exchange with mom is so relatable
Then the two debate whether Michelle told her mother about the event. "I guess you were a hit at the Grammys ", her mom wrote. "I thought I told you", Michelle answered.

West Indies head coach Richard Pybus, speaking at close of play, told BBC Radio's Test Match Special: "Nothing has been reported to me but if a comment was made we'll review it and if it was untoward we'll be addressing it".

Bowler Gabriel was confronted by the England captain but no formal complaint was made about his language.

Although the mics did not catch Gabriel's earlier comments, it is understood the umpires spoke to him about them at the time.

"It's always a proper tussle out there".

"Shannon is a proper old-school fast bowler, I think we need to find out if there is anything behind the rumours and then we'll address it".

West Indies suffered a significant injury blow on the third morning of the third Test in St Lucia, when Keemo Paul, their impressive young allrounder, had to be stretchered from the field after damaging his right quadriceps.
