Ton-up Guptill hits form as Black Caps outclass Bangladesh

Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Mahmudullah

After an indifferent series against India, Martin Guptill roared back to run-making with his 15th hundred in ODIs, helping New Zealand win the first match in Napier by eight wickets.

Bangladesh set New Zealand a modest run chase of 233 after suffering an early collapse and the Black Caps overhauled it in 44.3 overs, finishing at 233 for two. New Zealand feasted on Bangladesh's vulnerability in their first global innings on an overseas tour, and picked four wickets inside the first 8.2 overs to leave them rattled.

Watch the second ODI between New Zealand and Bangladesh from 9.55pm, Friday on Sky Sports Cricket.

Guptill, returning from injury, put a poor run of scores behind him with a commanding 117 not out.

Just after getting to his seventh ODI fifty, Nicholls dragged an innocuous-looking Mehidy Hasan delivery back onto the stumps and had to depart for an 80-ball 53.

Ross Taylor finished 45 not out. And he did, getting off the mark with a couple of handsome shots, pounding into anything short and wide that Santner bowled, before falling to the same bowler after an important 37-run stand. Bangladesh went from 94 for 6 to 131 for 7, and Saifuddin then joined Mithun in the middle, the duo going on to add 84 runs for the eighth wicket.

New Zealand have gone for three frontline fast bowlers as they included Lockie Ferguson in place of legspinner Todd Astle.

Earlier, Trent Boult and Matt Henry cut through the Bangladesh top order, taking advantage as the ball swung and seamed early to leave the tourists 42-4, then 94-6. Rahman's foot slipped as he crouched for the shot and tumbled to the ground just outside his crease and wicketkeeper Tom Latham whipped off the bails.
