250 researchers warn: Airpods could cause cancer

FEAR Scientists say there is a potential cancer risk

The WHO has guidelines for what it considers to be a healthy level of EMF but the new petition claims that more research is needed.

Bluetooth, which allows data to be transferred wirelessly through the use of electromagnetic frequency (EMF) radio waves, may be especially unsafe when placed close to one's head.

The scientific jury is still out on the whether or not the particular devices an cause cancer, but animal studies on the kind of radiofrequency radiation that they emit has suggested a link to cancer.

Last year, Apple sold more than 28 million pairs of AirPods and more than 16 million the year prior, according to the Daily Mail.

But the new petitions' authors warn that even these guidelines could be unsafe - and much more research is needed.

Wireless headphones establish a connection between content on your phone or streaming content and your ears using bluetooth, which is a radio frequency, in the same frequency range as microwaves, WiFi, cell phones and other electronic devices, according to the University of California.

Bluetooth operates on one form involving low-power radiowaves. Phillips is one of the many scientists who have called for a restriction on use of such devices.

'Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being in humans'.

"My concern for AirPods is that their placement in the ear canal exposes tissues in the head to relatively high levels of radio-frequency radiation", said Prof Jerry PhillipsUniversity Of Colorado, who is among the large group of scientists to have signed a petition.

Bluetooth technology communicates to a cellular device that's usually not more than a few feet away, which means that,"it's transmitting at quite a low power level", University of Pennsylvania bioengineering professor Kenneth Foster told the Los Angeles Times in a 2016 interview about wireless headphones. These forms of energy are powerful enough to shake up atoms that compose cells but not powerful enough to change their structures, which means their radiowaves are less unsafe than radiation from X-rays or UV, but are still risky.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2011 categorized radio frequencies like bluetooth as a "possible human carcinogen".

"By not taking action, the WHO is failing to fulfill its role as the preeminent worldwide public health agency", the experts wrote.
