American sentenced in Iran to 10 years in prison

Lawyer: US Navy Veteran Held in Iran Sentenced to 10 Years

Iranian authorities sentenced U.S. Navy veteran Michael White to 10 years in prison for allegedly insulting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and disclosing private information by posting a phone of a woman he was visiting on Instagram.

The American man was reportedly charged with insulting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and posting a private photograph publicly, according to The Guardian.

The State Department was informed of the sentencing by Swiss diplomats who represent USA interests in Iran, according to Zaid, who said White has not been allowed to communicate directly with his family.

Michael White was arrested in July previous year while reportedly visiting an Iranian woman in the city of Mashad.

White was the first American to be detained in Iran since Donald Trump became president of the United States.

His court-appointed lawyer for the two hearings did not speak English, Zaid said, adding that the family is working on hiring an Iranian lawyer to handle White's appeal. She added that he had been undergoing treatment for a neck tumor and has asthma.

One of the women told Xinhua "No matter what cultural backgrounds, races or religions you are from, we are absolutely together". Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the suspect as an "extremist right-wing violent terrorist".

White, a California native, served 13 years in the Navy.

Zaid said Saturday that White apparently traveled to Mashhad without informing the woman in advance.

"That's certainly our concern, that's he's being used as a pawn", Zaid said.

The family and the State Department were still trying to determine whether the charges were politically motivated or the result of a criminal prosecution, Zaid said. Iranian-American art dealer Karan Vafadari and his Iranian wife, Afarin Neyssari, received 27-year and 16-year prison sentences, respectively.

Few details are known about the charges he faces and was convicted of.

Also in an Iranian prison is Nizar Zakka, a USA permanent resident from Lebanon who advocated for internet freedom and has done work for the US government. Both are serving 10-year sentences on espionage charges.

A fourth, former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Robert Levinson, has been missing in Iran since 2007. Iran says that Levinson is not in the country and that it has no further information about him, though his family holds Tehran responsible for his disappearance.
