Android Q Beta: New Features, Release Dates and How to Get It

Google Releases Android Q Beta for Developers, Early Adopters

The Google Pixel 3 XL Lite is rumored to be an affordable variant of the search giant's Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL flagships, but the latest leaks suggest it may fall short of expectations. Android Q has a new feature that lets you create a QR code for your Wi-Fi network, or scan a QR code to join a Wi-Fi network, directly in the device's Wi-Fi settings. There are also new restrictions on apps launching background tasks without user knowledge, and restrictions that limit access to location data only while the app is in the foreground. If you don't have a Pixel and still want to give it a go, you can, it's just a bit of a pain: you have to use the Android Emulator and grab the emulator images from the SDK Manager in Android Studio (this really is intended for devs). Google says that apps can either use their own sandbox to store data or in "common collections".

In other permission related changes, the Access Storage permission has now been split to individual folders that includes Photos, Videos, Audio and Downloads. Android Q is also adding "experimental support" for ANGLE on top of Vulkan, which is "a graphics abstraction layer designed for high-performance OpenGL compatibility across implementations".

Android Q brings new features to your smartphone, the most expected one being probably the dark mode but it's not the only new feature this version has in store. Many of these new Q Beta 1 features may increase convenience, ease-of-use or security for the user.

It's time to ready your apps for Android Q, developers.

IBM Secretly Used Flickr Photos for Facial Recognition
IBM has been accused of using Flickr photos for a facial-recognition project, without the full consent of people in the images. They were a part of the YFCC100M, a dataset that consisted of 99.2 million photos and 0.8 million videos from Flickr.

The second and more courageous option to try the new Android is manually flashing the Android Q factory images.

So far there's no mention of any other handsets in the list, but we suspect that will change by the time Google I/O comes around and the company launches it officially. A desktop mode, allowing Android apps to run in a windowed format similar to a PC or Mac, was also present. Bugs in the beta can cause you to have to reset the device. Yeah, screen recording isn't enabled by default but Android Q allows you to record your screen simply by flipping the switch on a feature flag in the developer options setting page.

The beta is aimed at developers rather than normal users, but that doesn't mean you can't install it and have a poke around anyway. Don't do this out of casual interest, especially since future betas figure to be more stable.
