"The official HIV prevalence for persons aged 15-49 years in Nigeria is now 1.4 percent".

Who has the lowest regional AIDS prevalence rate in Nigeria?

The team had earlier met with President Muhammadu Buhari to launch the new result of the survey undertaken by the group.

The president said the survey and its results had come at the right time as the government commenced the full implementation of the National Health Act that would ensure that every Nigerian has access to comprehensive healthcare services. "Let us work collectively and push for the last mile".

The Nigeria aids indicator and impact survey is the largest single one ever done in the world. The survey provides a clearer understanding of Nigeria's HIV epidemic and shines a light on progress and the remaining gaps and challenges.

"Today is a critical turning point in Nigeria for an HIV epidemic that has killed many of our countrymen and women".

"While it is fantastic news that there are fewer people living with HIV in Nigeria than previously thought, we must not let down our guard". Significant efforts have been made in recent years to stop new HIV infections among children.

He declared "greater emphasis will be place on preventing HIV transmission to babies so that no baby is born positive".

"I think, in recognition of the status of your organization, we are delighted to be able to formalise this bilateral relationship and to capture our cooperation more directly within that framework", Onyeama said. President Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed the reduction of the HIV/AIDS prevalence in the country. HIV prevalence is also high in the North Central zone (2.0%) and in the South East zone (1.9%).

India disappointed by Pakistan’s shifting stance on Kartarpur corridor
This will be preceded by a meeting of the technical experts on 19 March at the proposed zero points to finalise the alignment. Both sides held detailed and constructive discussions on various aspects and provisions of the proposed agreement.

The survey also showed that the South West zone has 1.2 per cent, while the North East has 1.1 per cent.

Buhari also noted that the results would provide the government with appropriate information that would enable the country beat the 2030 target of ending the epidemic. "Everyone infected with HIV needs to get treatment so they can achieve viral suppression, especially pregnant women. We know we can support HIV-positive mothers, hence ensuring the next generation is free from HIV", he said.

Speaking at the unveiling of NAIIS, a national household-based survey on the prevalence of Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV) and related health indicators, at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, the president said, "we can not celebrate yet, as nearly a million Nigerians living with HIV are now not on treatment".

She thanked development partners, whose support in the HIV response has been invaluable, and charged government at all levels to increase funding for HIV response using Nigeria's own domestic resources.

According to the survey, the seven states with high prevalence account for 50% of the overall estimated number of persons living with HIV in Nigeria.

The event is being organized by the Minister of Health and the National Agency for the Control of Aids.

The NAIIS was led by the Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Agency for the Control of AIDS. She made the call during a courtesy visit by Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), on Thursday, 14 March, 2019 at the State House, Abuja.

The survey was completed at the end of December 2018.
