Butterball Recalling Raw Ground Turkey Over Possible Salmonella Contamination

Butterball recalls nearly 80,000 pounds of turkey after salmonella cases

North Carolina-based Butterball is recalling just over 78,000 pounds of raw ground turkey products that could be contaminated with what's known as salmonella schwarzengrund, according to the agency.

The problem was discovered by FSIS and public health officials, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, which was investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Schwarzengrund illnesses.

The recall affects products produced on July 7, 2018, but the company is concerned consumers may have it stored in their freezers. "P-7345" inside of the USDA mark of inspection.

The cases are not related to a previous multistate salmonella outbreak linked to turkey products.

48-ounce plastic wrapped tray labeled "BUTTERBALL everyday Fresh Ground Turkey WITH NATURAL FLAVORING (93% LEAN/7% FAT)" with sell or freeze-by date of July 26, 2018, lot code 8188 and UPC code 22655-71556 represented on the label. Do not eat recalled ground turkey.

People who have packages of the recalled turkey should throw them or return them to where they were bought, the FSIS said. Most of the potentially contaminated products carry the Butterball brand, but two lots are branded Kroger and Food Lion.

Butterball, perhaps the nation's best-known turkey brand, is recalling 39 tons of turkey because it might be tainted with salmonella.

Visit the USDA-FSIS website for a list of recalled products.

Unfortunately, salmonellosis is a pretty common stomach infection. About 23,000 people a year have to be hospitalized and 450 die, usually those over 65 years old or under 5 years old. Eating food contaminated with salmonella can cause symptoms including abdominal cramps and fever 12 to 72 hours later. Sick people should tell their doctors about the possible exposure to Salmonella bacteria because special tests are necessary to diagnose salmonellosis. Illnesses typically last four to seven days. They also suggest those with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to illness. Common best practices include not eating raw eggs or undercooked meats; refrigerating food properly; washing your hands after using the toilet or changing a diaper; washing your hands thoroughly when cooking; keeping kitchen surfaces clean; keeping cooked and uncooked food separate at all times; and washing raw fruits and vegetables before eating.
