Facebook and Instagram Face Historic Outages

Facebook and Instagram applications are shown on the screen of an iPhone in Zagreb Croatia

"As with almost every Facebook outage, users headed to Twitter with the hashtag #facebookdown quickly becoming the top trending topic in the United States", according to USA Today.

When Did the Outages Begin?

Users of Facebook Inc. and two of its popular side shoots, Instagram and Messenger, experienced technical difficulties around the globe for hours on Wednesday.

USAToday.com reported that Facebook users have clicked over to Twitter, where the hashtag #facebookdown is trending, but the story said it is not clear at this time what's causing the issue.

What Do the Outages Entail?

Liverpool loanee Karius criticised by Besiktas manager
The team is now placed third in the Turkish league, behind Ishtanbul Basaksehir and Galatasaray. Besiktas will play 16th-placed Goztepe in their next game on Saturday.

Issues seem to have begun around 4pm this afternoon with many fans of the service reporting that they are still unable to log in, make new posts or add comments to stories. "Facebook's ad section was not functioning either, and it led to an internal error when you tried to buy an ad", the website reported.

It appears users all over the world are reporting problems. Some users were frustrated in attempts to sign into apps like Spotify and Tinder that require a Facebook login. The VR tool Oculus also would not work properly.

The live outage map on downdetector.com shows outages spread across the U.S.

Why Did the Outages Occur?

The Verge tested Facebook's ad platform and found problems there, too.
