Facebook says it’s resolved outage issues and denies attack

The company said it has fixed the glitch.

Some of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp's more than 2 billion users were unable to access the online services from Wednesday until Thursday afternoon as the social network and its sister apps suffered a prolonged outage.

Facebook acknowledged the issues, and assured users that they were not caused by a malicious DDoS, in a post on Twitter - the only social network which appeared to survive the crash, as it's not part of Facebook's "family of apps". "We are 100 per cent back up and running and apologize for any inconvenience", a Facebook spokesperson said.

Facebook first acknowledged the problems in a tweet Wednesday at 1:49 p.m. ET, then said in a follow-up message that it was able to confirm the outages were not caused by distributed denial-of-service attack, in which networks are overloaded with bogus traffic created to disrupt service. Reuters was not immediately able to verify those claims and the company declined to comment beyond the statement on resumption of services.

One soldier to face prosecution — Bloody Sunday

"As a result, many people had difficulty accessing our apps and services", Facebook said.

DownDetector website - one of the internet's most used sources of numbers on outages - showed the number of complaints had peaked at more than 12,000, gradually falling to about 180 as of 11 a.m. ET on Thursday.

Thousands of users took to Twitter over the past day to complain about the outage, causing the hashtag #facebookdown to trend.

Facebook's stock fell almost 3% in early morning trading on Thursday as Wall Street reacted to the outage.
